Five earn medals at Eudora

EUDORA -- Five Fort Scott High School wrestlers earned medals as the Tigers finished in fifth place at the Eudora Tournament of Champions here over the weekend.

Victor Hughes won seven matches on his way to finishing on top of the 138-pound bracket. Tyler Sharp (120) and John Metcalf (170) finished fifth in their weight classes while Christian Tavenaro (182) was seventh and Jerad Heckman (126) finished eighth.

"We wrestled with intensity though our lineups," Fort Scott head coach David Brown said.

As a team, Fort Scott finished 12th with 122.5 points. Lawrence, a Class 6A school, took first. St. Thomas Aquinas was second and Tonganoxie placed third.

Hughes went 4-0 with three pins in the pool portion of the competition on Friday. He pinned Ryan Baines of Kansas City-Piper, Brett Williams of Eudora and Kellen Rios of Blue Valley-Stilwell and took a 7-0 verdict over Austin Magdaleno of Lawrence.

In the championship bracket on Saturday, Hughes pinned Shawnee-Mill Valley's Jake Ellis in the third period in the first round. He defeated Chanute's Jared Fiscus, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, 7-2 in the semifinals. In the championship, he prevailed in overtime over the top-ranked wrestler in Class 6A, Reis Humphrey of Shawnee Mission South, 7-5.

Metcalf was also undefeated in his pool and won his first-round bracket match by injury default. But he was pinned in the semifinals by Wellsville's Jesse LaMay. Blake Hampton of Spring Hill took a 3-0 win in the consolation semifinal. Then Metcalf pinned Lucas Becker of Eudora in the fifth-place match.

Sharp won three of four matches in the pool. Maize South's Jaysten McClure took a 12-4 decision in the first round of the bracket. He defeated Atchison County's Wiley Dieckmann in the consolation quarterfinal, 5-4, but lost to Spring Hill's Corey Spader, 5-1, in the semifinal. He received an injury default over McClure in the fifth-place match.

Tavenaro was 2-1 in a four-man pool that had two byes. He lost the first match in the bracket, getting pinned by Lawrence's Reece Wright-Conklin, who went on to win the championship. Tavenaro also lost a 7-4 decision to Perry-Lecompton's Luke Kellum but finished seventh with an injury default over Shawnee Mission South's Adolph Matthews.

Heckman was 2-1 in his pool but went 0-3 in the bracket, dropping the seventh-place match to Prairie View's Dannon Brake by a 9-3 score.

The Tigers will take part in the Ottawa Tournament Saturday.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Fort Scott's junior varsity team finished third in a tournament at Kansas City-Harmon Saturday. Daniel Varner placed second at 160 pounds, B.J. Wilson second at 220 and Garren Lorenz third at 120.

The JV squad will wrestle in the Cherryvale Tournament Saturday.
