Tiger boys beat AB, 56-55

WILLARD, Mo. -- Senior Daniel Durbin scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter Thursday night as Fort Scott High's boys held off Arkansas Baptist, 56-55, on the first day of the Willard Tri-State Classic.

Fort Scott's girls led early but watched Arkansas Baptist pull away late for a 57-41 win.

Durbin had to sit out the first half of the boys' contest as head coach Jeff DeLaTorre told KOMB's Larry Gazaway in the pre-game show that Durbin had not taken care of some academics during the week.

But the 6' 5" senior post, who entered the game midway through the third quarter, took over in the paint in the fourth. Durbin scored all five of Fort Scott's field goals, including the game-winning shot off a pass from Cameron Woodring with six seconds remaining in the game.

Arkansas Baptist called two time outs but could not make a shot as the final horn sounded.

Neither side enjoyed an especially large lead during the contest. The Tigers' largest was 6 points after Matt Wright scored 5 points to open the second half and extend Fort Scott's lead to 34-28.

The Eagles' largest lead was 4 on two occasions in the fourth quarter, the last at 50-46. Woodring made two free throws, then Durbin scored consecutive baskets to put the Tigers up 52-50 with 2:08 to go.

Alex Becker hit a 3-point shot for the Eagles with 1:55 let to put them up 53-52. Durbin scored to put the Tigers up one with 1:40 to go. Noah Patterson gave Arkansas Baptist its final lead, 55-54, with 25 seconds left.

Durbin, Woodring and Wright scored 12 points each for Fort Scott, which made 11 of 15 free throws. Kyle Altic added 8 points.

Drake Newkirk led Arkansas Baptist, scoring 18 points before fouling out with just over two minutes remaining. Becker had 9 points for the Eagles.

The Tigers led 19-15 after 10 minutes of play but were outscored by 20 points the rest of the way.

Fort Scott led 9-3 after Heather Karleskint's basket capped a 9-0 run. Arkansas Baptist's 6' 1" freshman center Caroline Hogue scored back-to-back baskets to bring the Eagles (3-1) within 11-9. Kayla Bird tied the score at 12-12 with 1:13 left on a 3-pointer.

Sidney Maycumber scored consecutive hoops to put the Tigers head 16-12 before Bird hit another triple to bring the Eagles within one as the period ended.

Katren Rienbolt scored a basket and Karleskint made one of two free throws to put Fort Scott up 19-18 with 6:18 left in the first half. The Eagles scored the next 9 with Apple Filat scoring 6 of those.

Arkansas Baptist led 28-22 at halftime and Jordie Poe hit a 3-point shot to start the second half to push the lead to 9.

Maddi Allen and Rienbolt scored back-to-back baskets bringing the Tigers within 31-26, which was as close as they would get in the second half.

Arkansas Baptist led 38-27 after three and pulled away by making 11 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Brianne Lawrence led Fort Scott with 14 points, going 8 of 11 at the free-throw line. Every Tiger who played scored with Rienbolt putting in 7 points.

Filat finished 12 of 14 at the free-throw line and had 16 points after scoring none in the first period. Bird finished with 11 points and Hogue scored 11 before fouling out.
