LARRY G. CARPENTER

Larry G. Carpenter, 73, of Farlington, Kan., died at 4:15 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at the Girard Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 8, 1937, in Pleasanton, Kan., a son of Harry Franklin and Emogene (McCoach) Carpenter.

He attended schools in Pleasanton, graduated from Fort Scott Community College and received his education in meat cutting in Wichita. He served in the National Guard.

He married Anita Hurd in July of 1958 in Pleasanton. They divorced. He married Mary K. Failes in Mena, Ark. She preceded him in death on Aug. 12, 2010.

He worked as a butcher at Safeway Stores for 30 years in Fort Scott, Joplin and Pittsburg, and at Keith's IGA and later at G & W Foods, both of Girard.

He was a member and past master, in 1970, of the Eureka Lodge No. 88 in Pleasanton, the Consistory in Fort Scott and the Mirza Shrine in Pittsburg.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and gardening.

Survivors are sons Stephen P. Carpenter and wife Jana of Poteet, Texas, and Michael G. Carpenter and friend Karen of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren Carrie Rivera, Ben Carpenter and Nocolette Carpenter; daughter-in-law Angela Carpenter of Fort Scott and brother Harry D. Carpenter of Fort Scott.

He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Carpenter, in 1994, and a sister, Louise Licklider, in 1996.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Rev. Doug Amend officiating. Burial will be in the Farlington Cemetery.
