Tiger JV second in home tournament

Fort Scott High School's junior varsity tennis team began its season with a second-place finish in its home tournament Monday, tying with Pittsburg.

Independence won the team title with 12 points as it swept all four divisions. Fort Scott and Pittsburg had 6 points each with both getting two seconds and two thirds. Iola scored no points.

Krista Hightower finished in second place in No. 1 singles. She defeated Shelly Reno of Iola, 6-0, and Olivia Laidler of Pittsburg, 6-4. Taylor Mason of Independence won her match versus Hightower, 6-2.

Brittany Burns and Kandice Rost finished second in No. 2 doubles. They shut out the Iola duo of Alexis Hobbs/Emmalee Seabolt and defeated Pittsburg's Mikayla Pichler/Lauren Sullivan, 6-3. They lost to Indy's Kalei Matthews/Shalei Matthews, 6-2.

Sammi Carr took third in No. 2 singles, beating Shyanne Hendry of Iola, 6-3. Halei Matthews of Independence was a 6-0 winner and Braquel Beachner of Pittsburg took a 6-1 win.

Aubin Duff and Natalie Carr finished third in No. 2 doubles. They shut out Iola's Krystal Smith/Brianna Jett, and lost to Indy's Zoe McCallum/Calisse Papen, 6-2, and Pittsburg's Emily Hicks/Carly Johnson, 6-3.

The next outing for the Tiger JV will be at Pittsburg Monday. The Fort Scott varsity begins its season Thursday at Parsons.
