'Hounds manage to stay in poll
The voters still have some respect for Fort Scott Community College's football team.
After an 0-2 start in which they've been outscored104-49, it was entirely possible that the Greyhounds could have dropped completely out of the NJCAA Football Poll when it was issued Wednesday morning. But the voters considered that those losses were to the defending national champion on the road and against then-No. 6 Butler and gave Fort Scott enough votes to keep them in the poll at No. 19.
Fort Scott lost to Butler 49-7 last Saturday and will host unranked Independence (0-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Frary Field.
Defending champ Blinn (2-0), which beat Fort Scott in the season opener, maintained its hold on No. 1 after whipping Southeast Prep 70-7 Saturday.
Staying at No. 2 is Arizona Western (1-0) which was off last week after opening its season with a 49-7 win over Monterrey Tech of Mexico (some reports, however, have this game listed as a scrimmage).
Butler (2-0) moved up to No. 4 after an opening victory over then No. 4 Navarro and the win last week over the Greyhounds.
Two other Jayhawk Conference teams moved up in the rankings. Hutchinson (2-0) is up one place to No. 8 this week after beating Independence 55-26. Coffeyville jumped from 18th to No. 10. The Red Ravens whipped Dodge City 72-7 last week and also had a season-opening 27-10 victory over then No. 14 Tyler.
Snow (Utah) rounds out the top five. The Badgers have a tough road trip scheduled this week at Georgia Military.
The second five has Ellsworth (Iowa) at No. 6 followed by Grand Rapids, Hutchinson, Navarro and Coffeyville.
The Mississippi conference also has four ranked teams with Gulf Coast leading the way. Jones County is 11th with Northwest Mississippi 15th and East Mississippi 16th.
"Next game" is this Saturday unless noted.
