God's Coffeehouse Fundraiser successful despite rain

On Dec. 11, Mary Virginia (Corporon) Shead will turn 90 years old. Her family want to invite friends and family members to a reception in honor of her 90th birthday. It will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Acadia Christian Chuch Bungalow in Arcadia, Kan., Sunday, Dec. 7. It is requested no gifts. However, cards either mailed or hand delivered are very welcome. Allen and Linda Watt with Douglas Watt and friend Don Bassett drove to Fort Worth, where they spent several days to enjoy the NASCAR Nationwide Race held in Texas Motor Speedway. They returned to their homes in Wichita joyful that Kyle Busch had overpowered the field and won after his 10th try this season.

Upon returning home from a business trip to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Ralph and Cindy Shead were overnight guests of former KOAM weatherman and wife, Geoff and Angie Cornish in Lexington, Ky. Geoff is weatherman at a TV station there.

Congratulations to Jerry James who recently received his Bronze Star and Air Medal on Veterans Day 2008. He earned these awards and a V Device for Valor for an act of heroism in Vietnam 39 years ago. His Mother, Maxine James, was pictured with him in The Morning Sun.

It was a cold rainy night but Wayne Parrish cooked the hot dogs and hamburgers outdoors for the fund raiser to help God's Coffeehouse finish remodeling the building. Several played pool and enjoyed the food and fellowship. Kevin Wells and friends, Lisa and daughter Shelby from ElDorado, Mo. brought with them three friends from their Biker's Club of Butler and Oceola, Mo. The raffle of two sets of jewelry were won by Megan Peterson of Frontenac and Kevin Wells. The committee in charge of the event gives thanks to all who helped in any way. Folks in attendance were pleased to see how much has been accomplished in the way of improving the inside of the building -- especially the stage with a tile floor and the walls and ceiling. Heading the committee were Lou and Betty Dehn, Linda Bridgewater and Patty Peterson.

The Cato Annual Tour was held on Saturday, Nov. 8. Approximately seventy people weathered the cold wind to attend the program at the Cato Church, School and weiner roast. Only the bravest went on the physical tour to the Old Simpson homestead and the Trogden Cemetery. The quilt donated by Sue James was won by Sharon Casey of Arcadia. Monies raised were from the sale of quilt tickets, paper weights, note cards and the Fannie Mae Turner Christianson print of the Cato Store, etc. Joe Bournonville was high bidder on the Store print.

On Oct. 5, Jerry and Lilly Coonrod cruised from Miami, Fla. on the Carnival Valor. They were accompanied by Pauline Hart and Mike McKenny from Fort Scott. Their cruise itinerary was Nassau, Bahamas, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and St. Maarten, NA. They spent several days in Fort Lauderdale visiting Jerry's brother Jack Coonrod before driving home. The Fall foliage was beautiful in Tennessee and Kentucky.

AHS OUR GANG gathering for Nov. 22, is the 4th Saturday at 6:30. For the menu each are asked to bring two baked potatoes ready to eat and a small dessert. Toppings for the potatoes and a salad will be available. Secretary Pat and Lee Wright wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving.

The second annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner was held Saturday evening, Nov. 15, in Community Center with 75 people signing the register held by Scott Ball. During the evening, a friend presented him with a framed picture of Scott that recently appeared in Pittsburg Morning Sun. His Mother, Joyce Stephens, was standing nearby as the crowd gave great applause.

Credit for this fine holiday dinner goes to the families who cooked, brought and served the dinner, then cleaned up the kitchen. Men were handy putting the tables and chairs back in their place. Arcadia folks have a fine holiday spirit. Happy Thanksgiving.

Early morning Friday, Nov. 7, Larry and Vickie Shead took seven Fort Scott Community College Students to Oral Roberts University to visit classes and tour the Campus. Many colleges offer such visits to possible future enrollees. While the students were entertained, the Sheads visited their daughter Maria Shead's 4th Grade Classroom in Victory Life Center nearby ORU. The group was joined for dinner by Vickie's Mother, Shirley Applegarth at the University.

Allen and Linda Watt came for Monday overnight and spent Veteran's Day with his Mother Mae Watt. They went to Fort Scott for shopping and enjoyed dinner at the Cowboys Grill. After doing jobs and visiting they returned to Wichita Tuesday evening.

A birthday offering was given by Don and Terry Bright on Nov. 16, to honor their son, Dusty Bright who is now 42 years old. Pastor David Peterson entitled his sermon "Challenges in the New Community" taken from Philippians 3 and 4. Because it was in the Scripture reading, the group sang a song from the children's group, "Rejoice in the Lord Always, Again I say Rejoice!" Special prayer was given for Willa Cable and family and Soldiers in Iraq. A map was in sight for all to see where our lesson was from when Paul wrote to the Philippians while he was in poor health in jail in Rome telling the Christians to Stand firm, Be Agreeable and Rejoice.

Announcements were for the Over 75 Holiday Dinner to be Dec. 13. Joy will be packing cookies after their meeting on Dec. 15. Delegates will attend the North American Missionary Convention the end of this month held in Tulsa, Okla.
