Mary Jane Callaway

Mary Jane Callaway, 87, Nevada, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2008, at Christian Healthcare in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Nevada, to George Hugh Callaway and Mary O. Wheatley Callaway.

Mary Jane grew up in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 1938. She attended Draughon Business University in Springfield, Mo. Mary Jane joined the Civil Service in 1941, stationed in Washington D.C. and New York City working for the Veterans Administration before joining the Marines and moving to Kansas City. She served for the U.S. Marine Corps from 1949 to 1953. Later, she moved to San Francisco working for the United States Radiological Defense Laboratory. Following that she went to San Diego working for the Naval Payroll until she retired in 1986. She moved to Nevada following her retirement where she volunteered for the Nevada Senior Center and the Bushwhacker Museum.

Survivors include one nephew, Richard Johnson, of Nevada; one niece, Judy Gammon, of Nevada, and numerous great-nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jack Callaway, and one sister, Betty Johnson.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, July 2, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, with pastor David Rorabaugh officiating. Friends may call now and until 10 a.m., on Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
