BETTY STOCKWELL
Florence Elizabeth "Betty" Stockwell, age 85, resident of Fort Scott, died Monday, May 14, 2007 at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri.
She was born February 6, 1922 in Fort Scott, the daughter of Earl D. Hurst and Iris Ellen Ragin Hurst. Betty was a 1940 graduate of Fort Scott High School and graduated from Fort Scott Community College in 1942.
She married John E. Stockwell on November 20, 1955 in Fort Scott. He preceded her in death in 1958.
While in High School, Betty worked at the Empress and Liberty Theaters. Following graduation from FSCC, she worked at Citizens National Bank prior to joining the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps where she was stationed in Michigan. Upon leaving the service, Betty lived in California where she worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and Western Pipe and Steel.
Following World War II, she returned to Fort Scott where she worked for Montgomery Ward, credit manager for Newman Young Clinic, Leek's Men's Wear, and field representative for the Crop Insurance Program under the direction of the Department of Agriculture. When that program was phased out, Betty worked as quality control supervisor for the Thayer Insurance Agency until her retirement.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, life member of the Order Eastern Star and the Fidelis Deo White Shrine No. 6. She also was a past den mother for the Cub Scout program. She enjoyed making quilts for the Presbyterian youth to raffle for fundraisers.
Survivors include two sons, John Michael Stockwell and wife Cindy, Plattsmouth, Nebraska and James Patrick Stockwell and wife Laurie, Oriental, North Carolina; step-daughter, Beverly Ann Post, Emporia; three brothers, Richard Hurst, Morganton, North Carolina, James Hurst, McCormick, South Carolina, and William "Bill" Hurst, Fort Scott. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Amanda Dawn Lebeck and husband Brian and Eric Michael Stockwell and fiancé Dana Peffer.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, George Hurst, Jack Hurst and Fred Hurst; and one sister, Lillian Cullop.
The Rev. Steve MacArthur will conduct graveside services at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the U. S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. in the Cheney Witt Chapel.
