Dr. Alice Hickey Peterson, age 90, recently of Fort Scott, Kan., died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at her daughter's home in Fort Scott. She was born October 24, 1916, in Vivian, Minnesota, the daughter of John Hickey and Mary Jo Kotitza Hickey.

She earned her Masters in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 1950 and her M.D. from the Creighton Medical School.

She served as the Director of Maternal and Child Health at the North Dakota State Health Department. She then served as Director of State Welfare for North Dakota until her retirement in 1972.

For the past three years, she has lived in Fort Scott with her daughter Christine, and attended the Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Andrea Delzer of Bismark, N. D., Christine Peterson of Fort Scott, Kan., Susan Peterson Pattantyus of Santa Clarita, California, and Jeanne Erickson of St. Cloud, Minn.; two sisters, Mary Jo Hamilton of St. Louis, Mo., and Jeanne Black of Shawnau, Wis.; and seven grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Hickey.

Following cremation, funeral services for Dr. Alice Peterson will be held in Bismark, North Dakota, at a later date. Local arrangements are under the direction of Cheney Witt Chapel, 201. S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
