Fort Scott church gets ready to fete 40th anniversary

Arcadians were saddened by the news that Carolyn Dobbins passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

She was the wife of former Arcadia resident and Arcadia High School graduate Dan Dobbins.

Mary V. Shead remembers attending the wedding of Carolyn and Dan in 1950. Dan Dobbins was working for her husband, Paul Shead, at Shead's Service at the time. Dan's father, Ed Dobbins, was a barber in Arcadia for many years.

Carolyn's grandfather owned Whiteside's Grocery store in Fort Scott. She worked there for most of her life in various capacities. She enjoyed checking the most. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the First Church of God.

David and Sandy Partridge, of Mulberry, placed their membership with the Arcadia Christian Church this past Sunday.

Scott Ball is in Korea to participate in the Special Olympics there. He will be there until Feb. 2. His mother is Joyce Stephens. Both are residents of Arcadia.

On Jan. 21, the JOY Sunday School Class of the Arcadia Christian Church held their monthly dinner meeting at the Christian Church Bungalow. There were 14 in attendance.

The Arcadia Christian Church Class No. 10 met on Jan. 16 at the church bungalow. Patty Peterson presided over the meeting. Due to ill health among some of the members, only five were present. Cathy Allen will be the hostess for the February meeting.

The Arcadia Christian Church JOY class is planning for a Women's Retreat to be held on March 30 at the church. Also, plans are being made for an Easter breakfast on March 31.

Charles and Willa Cable, pastors of the Arcadia Christian Church, served communion to Mary V. Shead.

She was unable to attend the services last Sunday, so they took the communion to her. They used the portable Communion Set given by the Corporon family to the church in memory of Mary V's mother, Mrs. G.W. Corporon.

Mark and Haley Shead, of Fort Scott, celebrated her birthday with a trip to Kansas City. While gone, their children, Katy and Benjamin, stayed with their grandparents, Larry and Vickie Shead, of Garland.

Four people have filed to run for three positions in the upcoming Arcadia election. Alvin R. Buffington, Gary W. Peterson, John Whetzel, and Brandy Trammell will seek to fill the three at-large positions.

Community Christian Church in Fort Scott will be celebrating its 40th anniversary on Feb. 10. The guest speaker in the morning services will be Leon Weece, who was the first minister when the church started 40 years ago.

Prior to this, Mr. Weece had preached at the Arcadia Christian Church while he was a student at Ozark Christian College.

Gael Martin, Spring Hill, flew to join her daughter, Sarah, who was in New Jersey training for a new job as a pharmaceutical sales representative. They then went to New York City to see the sights. They had dinner with Gael's aunt and uncle, Jack and Harriett Corporon, and her cousin, David and wife Yvette Corporon.

The Corporons all live in the NYC area. Jack Corporon is the youngest son of G.W. and Portteus Corporon and grew up in Arcadia. David is the youngest of all the Corporon cousins.
