Fighting those pesky weeds

Two Kansas State University specialists spoke to about 30 people about the need to be observant of conditions in their fields.

A herbicide-resistant weed program Jan. 22 at the Yeager Building on the Bourbon County Fairgrounds was provided by the Southwind Extension District, a part of K-State Research and Extension.

Dallas Peterson, K-State weed specialist, talked about how weeds are becoming resistant to herbicides, "especially waterhemp has developed resistance to Round-Up.

He said the take-home for participants is, "farmers need to be more diversified in their herbicide program."

Doug Shoup, area agronomy specialist, said his presentation was about cost savings to crop and livestock producers. "Because of the poor corn (crop) last year, we have extra nitrogen left over for forage crops or wheat so these are cost savings this spring for producers. Now they don't have to put extra nitrogen on."
