(1913)

The Cowan family at Uniontown has the distinction of being represented by persons of five generations distinction which is very infrequent indeed, and doubtless does not have a parallel in this county, if indeed in this section of the state. The eldest member of the family is Mrs. Mary A. Johnson, who is 90 years of age. She has one living daughter, Mrs. Henry Cowan, who is 70. Mrs. Cowan has one son, G.W., who is 50, and his son, Fred, is 22. Fred now has a daughter about a month old.

It is reported that John Pritchard, of Prescott, has bought a half interest in the livery barn at Prescott.

The large boiler is being lowered to the basement today in the new Margrave Street School building. It is large enough to heat all of the building in the coldest weather. The task of lowering it to its place was no small task.

Wallace Buck, manager of the Ice Service Company, told the story of the ice industry at the Rotary luncheon meeting. He traced the industry from ancient civilization when ice was served to persons only of high rank, to the present day when ice is used commonly.

The ice industry of today grew up from the old practice of cutting ice from rivers and ponds to be stored in winter for the rest of the year. The first ice machinery was invented in 1750, he said, but was not used much until a few years later when a warm spell caused a shortage of natural ice.

Ice plants of today freeze large quantities of purified water by a process of transferring heat from the water by brine solution and ammonia, the speaker explained. Fort Scott has excellent water for ice making, he said.

The next 24 hours offers little relief from blizzard-like conditions which descended on Fort Scott yesterday noon Continued quite cold is forecast for the area through tomorrow. Snow-packed streets were causes of three accidents this morning. Mrs. Dale McDaniels said her taxi company had 200 passengers between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Passengers said they either could not get their vehicles started or they did not want to drive on the slick streets.

Temperatures are expected to fall 5 to 10 degrees below zero again tonight with tomorrow's high at 15 degrees. A year ago the high and low degrees were 26 and 2 degrees.
