Tiger girls take Frontenac title, 43-37

FRONTENAC -- Fort Scott High's girls claimed the championship of the first Frontenac Kansas National Guard Invitational here Saturday with a 43-37 victory over Baxter Springs in the final game of the round-robin tournament.

Fort Scott went 3-0 in the tournament and has won seven of its last eight games overall. Baxter Springs finished in third place with a 1-2 record in the tourney. The Lions are 5-4 overall.

The Tigers jumped out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter and were able to make it hold up even though the Lions outscored them in the second and third by a combined 23-15.

Sidney Maycumber scored 9 of her team-leading 17 points in the fourth quarter. Ashley Cook added 13 points, which included three 3-point shots. Cook was named to the All-Tournament Team as she scored 45 points and made 10 threes in the tourney.

Frontenac finished second in the tournament with a 59-37 win over Kansas City, Mo., Hogan Prep.

Also named to the All-Tournament Team were Bailey Flora and Ryleigh McCartney of Frontenac, Aleigh Grimes and LaNina Spence of Baxter Springs, and Alyah Chivers of Hogan Prep.

Fort Scott had lost its last 11 games in tournaments of any kind coming into the round-robin. Prior to Thrusday's 56-45 victory over Frontenac, the Tigers last tourney win was at Iola in the first round of the 2011 Paola Class 4A Sub-State Tournament.
