Holiday events slated
Upcoming holiday events and activities were among announcements made during the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce Coffee Thursday morning, hosted by Radio Shack.
Tim and Deb McKenney, owners of Fort Scott Broadcasting and Radio Shack, talked to attendees about the history of their business and introduced several employees, many of whom have worked there for several years.
Tim said the local radio station, KOMB-FM and KMDO-AM, has been on the air since 1954. Radio Shack was added in late 2003.
Tim and longtime employee Noel Connet also talked about some new products the store is offering and popular buys for the holiday season. Tim said the store will open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the traditional start of the Christmas shopping season.
The following announcements were made during the coffee:
* Bob Eckles, director of The Beacon, talked about the agency's annual Adopt-A-Child program, which provides sponsors who donate food, toys and clothing during the holiday season to children 14 years of age and younger who come from low-income families. He said the suggested spending is $25 per child. He also said the annual Kiwanis Club Pancake Feed, the club's annual fundraiser, is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 13 at the Scottish Rite Temple.
* City Manager Dave Martin announced that two local community members -- Annamarie Holmes, director of physicians at Mercy Hospital, and Marlan Kirch, store manager at Woods Supermarket -- will be moving soon to take on positions in other communities and they will be greatly missed. Holmes has accepted a job with St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City and Kirch plans to manage a new Woods store being built in the Lake of the Ozarks area. Both are leaving by the end of the month.
* Gary Palmer with Fort Scott Community College reminded attendees that the FSCC Alumni and Friends Holiday Party is set for Dec. 13 at the Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center.
* FSACC Executive Director Lindsay Madison said the Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 27 in the downtown area. The event will include a live nativity scene presented by Bethel Community Church, lighting of the Mayor's Christmas tree, a ham and bean feed at the Scottish Rite Temple, and a visit from Santa Claus to the Scottish Rite Temple that night after the parade. Visitors may take pictures of Santa with their own cameras and kids can talk to St. Nick about their Christmas wishes.
* Madison also mentioned a free brief presentation that is scheduled to take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Courtland Hotel and Aveda Spa Salon, 121 E. First St. Fort Scott Police Department Lt. Travis Shelton will discuss topics related to credit card fraud, bad checks, as well as "things to look out for and how the process works if an incident occurs," Madison said.
"We encourage small business owners to come, but anyone can attend," she said.
Madison said the presentation is important for store owners "with the holiday season and increased shopping coming up."
