Storm brings end to Tiger tennis dual

Fort Scott High School's final home tennis action of the season was brought to a premature end by the thunderstorms that rolled through the area Tuesday night. The majority of the junior varsity action was completed but the varsity was only able to complete four of the nine scheduled matches. The remainder of the dual will not be made up.

Doubles matches were played first. Jennifer Harrison and Corina Harrison were paired for varsity No. 1 doubles, beating Regan Kimbrough/Lauren Baker, 8-6. Courtney Crain and Michelle Buntain won the No. 2 doubles match over Jessica Decocq/Kierston Landron, 8-3. Kenna Savage and Krista Hightower defeated Megan Payne/Liz Smith, 8-5.

"We mixed things up a little from our normal lineup," Fort Scott Head Coach Lynn Barr said. "Jennifer and Corina wanted to play a match together before Corina graduated and we felt like this was a good time to do this. They played a good match against a good team from Nevada and came away with a nice win. Courtney then teamed up with Michelle for the first time all season and they played some very good tennis. Kenna and Krista had played a little together earlier in the season and they also played well."

Jennifer Harrison (12-2), a freshman, was the only one to complete a varsity singles match, but lost to Kimbrough, 8-5. Crain was leading Decocq, 3-1, when play was halted.

In JV doubles play, Jasmine Davis and Aubin Duff beat Amy Landol/Janelle Hawks, 6-4. Char Hutchison and Emmah Reeves defeated Katelyn Wilson/Marley Coonrod, 6-3. Danielle McDowell and Kristian Engle lost to Hayley Edwards/Ellie Pruett, 6-1.

In JV singles, Rost defeated Landol, 6-2, and Hutchison beat Hawks by the same score. Reeves downed Wilson, 6-4. Duff lost to Coonrod, 6-1, and McDowell fell to Edwards, 6-4. Engle was tied in her match with Pruett, 4-4, when the severe weather ended the match.

The JV season is over but the varsity will continue on as they travel to Parsons Saturday for the Southeast Kansas League Tournament.
