(1912)

M.V. Barnett has cleared the old frame building of his lot at 712 E. Wall St. for the erection of a fine new concrete and brick store building with plate glass front and attractive front. He has been in the dry cleaning business several years. Harvey Bryant will occupy the place and also put in a line of gents' furnishing goods. With the addition of a clothing store every kind of business is represented in this block.

Another aviator has been employed by the Aerial Navigation Company of Girard for the purpose of trying out some of the machines that the company has manufactured this summer. A machine has been taken to a field south of Franklin to be tried out. It is said that the aviator, who is French and a high class man, has flown just a little in his testing machine. No sort of spread eagle attempts will be made at flying until the bird man is sure of his airplane in every sense of the word.

The Fort Scott Greyhounds auspiciously opened the 1937 football season in Fort Scott last night by defeating the Iola Junior College in conference game by a score of 12 to 0. A crowd of 1,200 people braved the threatening weather to witness the contest, some 100 rooters coming from Iola. Max Fanning contributed a spectacular play in the second quarter when he took an Iola 38-yard punt and ran it back 46 yards.

Eugene Runyan, president of the Men of Montebleau Woods, the name of an organization of survivors of Fort Scott's old World War Company G, said the indications are there will be a record attendance of the 12th annual reunion of the veterans which is to be held at Memorial Hall tomorrow. There were over 100 present last year.

Editorial:

Certainly it's been said many times, but we don't mind repeating ourselves when it is something important: tourism is vital to Fort Scott.

Promoting tourism requires, first of all, bona fide attractions; there must be something for people to see. That we have in good measure, with the Fort Scott National Historic Site adjacent to our picturesque downtown and our fine old homes.

We are blessed by friendly and caring people. Call it an attitude of hospitality, if you will. It puts visitors in the frame of mind to come again and to tell their friends.
