No. 17 'Hounds beat Cottey

NEVADA -- Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team, ranked No. 17 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, defeated Cottey College in a non-conference match at the Hinkhouse Center here Wednesday night. The scores were 25-19, l25-18, 22-25, 25-15.

Ashley Bell recorded 15 kills for the Greyhounds (13-2) while Danielle Walker added 13 and Ali Cure finished with 9. Taylyn Schwartz handed out 43 assists. Kate Smith picked up 24 digs while Cure had 21. Bell was credited with four blocks.

The Greyhounds fell just one spot in the NJCAA Division II poll, released Wednesday afternoon. Fort Scott fell from No. 16 following a loss to then-No. 15 Kansas City Kansas last week. Of the five Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division teams ranked last week, the Greyhounds were the only one set to play on the road.

Defending Division II national champion Cowley remained at No. 1 while Butler moved up one spot to No. 6. Those two faced off Wednesday night at Arkansas City, with Cowley winning in five sets to remain undefeated at 15-0 with its 37th consecutive victory. Butler fell to 12-2.

Johnson County also moved up one spot and is ranked seventh. The Cavaliers (11-2) defeated Highland Wednesday night in four sets. Highland (11-6) continued to receive votes this week as it has the past two weeks.

The Greyhounds will take part in a tournament at Allen Community College in Iola today and Saturday
