Doris Beatrice Mack, 100, Fort Scott, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012, at Mercy Hospital.

She was born at the family home in Kansas City, Kan., on Sept. 30, 1911, the daughter of Arthur Green and Lena Joe (Horner) Simpson. She married Devney Mack Sr. Aug. 10, 1940, in Kansas City, Kan. He preceded her in death Dec. 25, 1985.

Doris and Devney were married for 45 years and had one son, Devney Mack Jr. who passed away Jan. 2, 2007. Doris still lived in the same house that she and her husband built after they moved from Kansas City to Fort Scott in 1946.

She was an active member of the Athenaeum Study Club for 25 years until it disbanded and she worked 12 years for the Red Cross. She and her husband were actively involved with the NAACP and traveled to the Civil Rights March on Washington in 1963.

Doris graduated from Sumner High School, began college at the University of Kansas and finished her bachelor's at Pittsburg State University. At the age of 80, she received her master's degree in music from Pittsburg State University. She always had a love for music and began playing the piano at the age of 5. She played the piano and organ for a number of churches and choirs.

Survivors include daughter-in-law Judy Mack, Fort Scott; a sister, Helen Burdette, Kansas City, Kan.; a niece, Sylvia King, Texas; a nephew, Hugh Hamilton, Kansas City, Kan.; four grandchildren, Craig Davis and Jamie, Tulsa, Okla., Estella LamFu, Tulsa, Okla., Devney Mack III, Fort Scott, and Cynthia Mack, Fort Scott; 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and son, Doris was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Muriel and Bernice, and a great-grandson, Matthew.

Pastor George Proctor will conduct funeral services for Doris at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with burial following at the Evergreen Cemetery.
