Newcomers welcomed at Joy Sunday school

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

The Joy Sunday school class in Arcadia Christian Church welcomed newcomers Debbie and Jeff Convirs from Arma on May 20. They have the bookstore "Hole in the Wall" in Arma.

That same Sunday, Clay Carrington led the singing a capella and gave the announcements and prayer from the printed list in the absence of Stuart Semple.

Then at the morning worship, Dave Bridgewater filled the pulpit in the absence of pastor Charles Cable. Unexpressed love was the sermon title taken from Genesis and concerned the story of Adam and Eve. Thank you to all for a fine Sunday morning.

Guests of Patty and Gary Peterson and Mary V. Shead on Tuesday, May 16, were Craig and Shirley Woolsey of Tulsa, Okla. They were returning from Kansas City after attending a graduation service of a relative.

Craig reminded the Arcadia folks that 50 years ago this year in 1962 he became the pastor of Arcadia Christian Church while a student at Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Mo. They are now retired but before that, they served as missionaries in Santiago, Chile. En route back to Oklahoma, they had dinner at Chicken Annie's for old time's sake.

Two students at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Jeremiah Plowden from Wichita, Kan., and Brandon Killebrewe from Washington, D.C., were dinner guests at the home of Larry and Vickie Shead on Wednesday evening last week.

Autumn Leaves senior citizens met in their cottage in Arcadia on Monday, May 14, for a ham, bean and cornbread dinner. There were also side dishes and plenty of dessert.

Among the 20 present was former Arcadian Barbara Morris, a well-known artist. On display that day was a picture she painted of the Cato Bridge that has recently been restored between the Cato school and church. It is to be presented to the Cato Committee and hung in the school house.

After the business meeting, bingo was played. Michelli Castro was the blackout winner. Others in attendance were Jim Turner, Shirley Garrett, Jack and Mary Lee Payne, Helen Sisney, Jessie and Hardy Dunn, Raymond Kalm, Lewis Kalm, David and Carol Bridgewater, Jerry and Lilly Coonrod, Brian Castro, Patty Peterson, Mary V. Shead, Greg Sisney and Cathy Allen.

We were sorry to miss the ladies from Arma Care Center who attended a nurses meeting the same day. We welcome them back for the June 11 meeting.

Parents are reminded that Arcadia Kids Days will be held June 6-8 in the Arcadia Christian Church Bungalow from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All from ages 3-16 are invited to attend. There will be prizes, surprises, crafts, games and much more. Lunch will be served each day.

Henry Brown and Karen Jerkins were married by Pastor Charles Cable in Arcadia Christian Church on Saturday, May 19, at 1 p.m. Willa Cable was the bride's matron of honor and Clay Carrington as best man. The bride's son gave her in marriage. Rings were exchanged.

A dinner was served following the ceremony in the Christian Church Bungalow prepared by lady friends of the couple to the 30 guests attending and expressing congratulations to the couple. Pictures were taken throughout the day, including the cutting of the wedding cake.

The bride and groom enjoyed the many gifts received by showing them to friends. Mr. and Mrs. Brown will be at home in their house, formerly known as the John and Cleo Scott home on North Ohio Street in Arcadia.

From Reach World Mission Inc. we hear from Mr. and Mrs. Michael Shead, missionaries in Guatemala, of the work being done. Michael translated for a medical team from Missouri in two different villages.

The team saw 500 patients and over 18 accepted Christ. Chrisi has started teaching hygiene lessons at the milk clinic and helping evaluate for malnourished infants and children.
