Allen sweeps Greyhounds in conference twinbill

IOLA -- Allen Community College swept a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader here Wednesday night at the ACCC gymnasium. Red Devil women outlasted the Greyhounds, 43-38, while Allen's men took control late in the second half to defeat Fort Scott 79-66.

The Greyhounds (2-9 East, 7-15 overall) led 21-16 with about six minutes remaining in the first half after Jolee Sharp, last week's conference Player of the Week, hit a 3-point shot.

But Fort Scott didn't score again the rest of the half and Allen (4-7, 9-14) took a 22-21 lead at the break on a jumper by Kayla Morton with 25 seconds to go.

The teams went back and forth to start the second half. Sharp gave the 'Hounds a 30-28 lead with a 3-point shot with 10:30 remaining. Jataeva Arnold followed with a layup and a free throw to make it 33-30 with 6:41 to go. Arnold's basket, which came with about eight minutes to go, was Fort Scott's last of the game.

Miracle Davis tied the score for Allen by converting a 3-point play with 6:23 left. Then Rackell Goldson and Jamie Peel hit consecutive 3-point shots to give the Red Devils a 39-33 lead with 3:29 left.

Peel's triple was the last field goal of the game and Allen won the battle of free throws in the final moments, making 4 of 7 while Fort Scott went 5 for 9 in the final 2:45.

Sharp finished with 15 points for Fort Scott while Pearl added 11. Arnold's seven points and Burgandie Lewis' five round out Greyhound scoring.

Goldson scored 16 points and collected 11 rebounds for Allen. Ebonie Jones finished with 12.

Fort Scott outrebounded Allen, 48-37.

Allen men 79, Fort Scott 66.

Fort Scott dressed seven men as Fort Scott High graduate Pierce Rienbolt joined former high school classmate Cody Harper on the roster. Harper scored in his first game Saturday at Cowley and Rienbolt got his first points as a Greyhound with 1:35 to go.

Fort Scott (1-10, 2-21) never led but managed to keep things close, fighting back from a 21-12 deficit with 6:56 left to get within 28-22 at the half on Harper's transition basket.

Julian Mills scored back-to-back hoops and Austin Danner followed with a 3-point play to bring the 'Hounds within 34-32 with 15 minutes to go. Another rally, with Danner scoring 5 in a row and Derrick Thomas taking a Rienbolt pass in for a basket, saw Fort Scott within 54-47 wit just over 8 minutes to go. But Allen scored the next 17 points to take control with four minutes to go.

Danner led the 'Hounds with 23 points, Teance Walton added 16 and Mills chipped in with 11. Terrell Shears led Allen (4-7, 10-13) with 20 points. Canon Fields and Seth Walden each posted 11 points and Terrence Williams finished with 10.

Fort Scott committed just 10 turnovers but collected only 15 rebounds as the Red Devils exploited their height advantage.

Fort Scott hosts Johnson County in a division doubleheader Saturday ar Arnold Arena. The women's game tips off at 2 p.m. with the men to follow at 4 p.m.
