Yvonne C. Ferris, 90, of Central City, Neb., died at her home on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church near Central City with Rev. Janet Burgel officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Interment will be in Burke Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Yvonne was born on Feb. 3, 1921, in Dedrick, Mo., to Joel M. and Florence (Brim) Culbertson.

She grew up in Missouri and Kansas, graduated from Fort Scott (Kansas) High School in 1938, and in 1940 she graduated from Fort Scott Junior College.

Yvonne taught school in Missouri in 1941, and on Jan. 8, 1942, she was united in marriage to Lislynn Ferris in Fort Scott. Yvonne and Lislynn made their home and farmed near Central City.

Yvonne worked for Travel Unlimited in Grand Island, was the executive director for Merrick Foundation and she worked at Miller and Paine in Grand Island during the holiday season.

Yvonne became a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in 1942. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women, was the first woman to serve on the Nebraska Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, and she actively worked on numerous boards and committees within the United Methodist Church. She was initiated into P.E.O. Chapter AB in 1967, belonged to an extension club and enjoyed quilting, knitting, sewing and needlepoint, spent many winter hours playing "their version" of bridge with her family and was an avid Husker football fan and professional baseball fan.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Lislynn Ferris of Central City; two sons, Galynn and Dee Ferris of Spring, Texas and Joel and Dee Ferris of Archer; one daughter, Cindi and Ken Haney of Sparta, Tenn.; two sisters, Nancy Ann Sullivan of The Woodlands, Texas, and Cecil Lou and David Barkley of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; 16 grandchildren and infant grandson, baby Luke, who welcomed her into her heavenly home; 26 great-grandchildren and was anxious for the birth of two more great-grandchildren.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, infant grandson Luke; her daughter-in-law Linda Ferris and two sisters, Jo Maxine Culbertson and Nadine Brandes.
