Virgil W. Ruthrauff, 90, of Moran, Kan., passed away Saturday, June 25, 2011, at the Wheatlands Health Care Center, Kingman, Kan.

Virgil was born July 31, 1920, at Redfield, Kan., the son of Glen and Goldie (Mangold) Ruthrauff. Virgil grew up in the Redfield area.

On April 9, 1944, Virgil married Myrtle Peterson. Four children were born to this union. Myrtle passed away on March 17, 1983.

He was a lifelong farmer and rancher, living in the Redfield, Uniontown and Moran area. His cattle herd was his passion. He also enjoyed traveling; however his family was the source of his greatest joy.

After Myrtle's death, Virgil married Irene Baker Wright on May 10, 1984, and she preceded him in death on July 2, 2007.

Virgil was a member of the Redfield Paint Creek Church and the Moran Presbyterian Church. He served 24 years on the Prairie Rose and Moran school boards. He also served on the boards of the Co-Op, A.S.C. and Federal Land Bank. Virgil was a member of the Grange, Farm Bureau, American Hereford Association, Federal Home and Farm Loans and Moran Ruritan.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Myrtle; an infant son, Virgil Jr.; his second wife, Irene; and two sisters, Frances Beasley and Wilma Smith.

He is survived by his three daughters, Jeanne Bedenbender and husband, Jerry, of Boise, Idaho, Colleen Strong and husband, Mike, of Kingman, Kan., and Vickie Welch and husband, Ray, of Alamosa, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, June Royston of Fort Scott, Kan.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 29, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, 344 N. Cedar, Moran, Kan., 66755. Burial will follow in the Moran Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Paint Creek Church or to the Wheatlands Health Care Center and sent in care of the funeral home.
