Friends are sorry to hear of the death of Webb Odle, 84, of rural Arcadia. He died at his home on Thursday, Jan. 20. He was a pipeline welder and a paratrooper at the Panama Canal. His wife, Lois Odle died April 19, 2008. He is survived by his son, J.D. Odle and a granddaughter, Nellie Odle Lamon and husband Jason of Girard. Bedene Funeral Home was in charge. No service was held following cremation.

Russell Rourk, 86, from Bronaugh, Mo., died Jan. 12, 2011. He was an Arcadia High School graduate in 1943. Condolences to the family.

Herman Tyler, 89, a longtime resident of Arcadia, died in Via Christi hospital, Pittsburg, on Jan. 16. His wife, Iris Tyler, preceded him in death. He was a member of Arcadia Christian Church. Father Larry Parker officiated at the services in Bedene Funeral Home Wednesday, Jan. 19. Burial was in Garden of Memories, Pittsburg. Sharon Barone was organist and soloist was Murray Lockwood. Casketbearers were grandsons, Damien Tiregol, Stuart and Tyler Jeck, granddaughter, Jessica Montanelli; and close friends, Gary Peterson and Larry Shead. He will be sadly missed by his friends who remember him as one of the workers in Dunton Furniture. Following the burial, dinner was served to the family by the Church's Funeral Committee in the Christian Church Bungalow.

Tom and Phyllis Watt of Lee's Summit, Mo., enjoyed a week on Sanibel Island, Fla., with their children and grandchildren, Tom and Dawson Watt, Jennie Woodward from Liberty , Mo.; Jeff, Julie and Alex Ralstron from DeSoto, Kan., Tracey, Austin, Sydney and Trent Siemens from Freeman, Mo., and Julie Watt from Uncasville, Conn. The seashell collecting was great including such treasures as starfish and seahorses. Other activities included fishing from the beach, dolphin watching, boat riding and swimming. Everyone gathered for family-style dinners each evening.

Ralph and Cindy Shead flew to Costa Rica on Jan. 17 for a meeting concerning Learning and Teaching Ministries of Joplin, Mo. They returned to their home in Carl Junction, Mo., on Monday, Jan. 24.

The Jan. 17 meeting of the JOY Sunday School Class was held in Christian Church Parsonage with Willa Cable as hostess. With her came Stuart and Ashley Semple and baby Elizabeth, all from Redfield. A bountiful dinner was served brought in by members.

After the business meeting conducted by President Patty Peterson, Vera Parrish entertained dedicating the farmer jokes to the class teacher, Gary Peterson. Others attending were John, Wayne andChristie Parrish; Betty Dehn and Mary V. Shead. President closed with scripture "The word of the Lord endures forever." The next Arcadia Christian Church dinner will be Sunday, Feb. 6, at noon, following the Sunday school classes and morning worship hour. Plans are for former Pastor Bob Cable to be in the pulpit that day.

The Four-State Hero on KOAM-TV on Dec. 29, 2010 was a local man who graduated from Arcadia High School, Lloyd Chapman, deceased. His wife, Weymouth Jones Chapman Filkins, was born and raised in Arcadia, was an AHS graduate and now lives in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Filkinses will be remembered as the couple who built the lovely home on Haller Hill, west of Arcadia. While the Filkins were living there, a bear invaded their home.

Nellie and Hurl Kalm celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary and Nellie her 92nd birthday with a family get-together on Jan. 18. Their son, Raymond Kalm, is living in the Kalm farm home since the "old timers" moved to Presbyterian Village in Fort Scott. Friends wish them many more "happy years."
