Arcadians prepare for holidays

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

The Sunday before Christmas, the Arcadia Christian Church had as their guest speaker a former pastor of our church, Bob Cable, son of present Pastors Willa and Charles Cable. With him was his family. Not only did he preach, but he was the pianist and, with his dad, sang a duet, How Great Thou Art before sermon time.

The young people sang Christmas carols with the congregation. They received special Christmas sacks from their teachers.

On Monday night following, the JOY Class had their monthly meeting with a soup supper held in the parsonage. As is the yearly custom, they boxed the Christmas cookies for gift giving to friends of the church.

Delton and Bill Watt attended the United American Workers Retiree dinner at the Ford Plant in Claycomo, Mo., last Wednesday then came to visit their mother, Mae Watt. They visited family graves in Sheffield Cemetery and enjoyed dinner at Chicken Mary's. Bob and Linda Roweth from Redfield enjoyed a visit with them one evening. The following Saturday, Tom and Phyllis Watt came from Lee's Summit, Mo., for a visit and enjoyed a meal together with Mae.

At the last meeting of Cato Historical Preservation Association, it was decided to have a three-day Sesquicentennial Crawford County Celebration on Oct. 21-23, 2011. There will be no meeting in December. The next scheduled meeting will be Jan. 25, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Arcadia Community Center.

The chairman, Susie Stelle, wishes you all happy holidays.

The wedding of Grant Hartman and Heather Davis was recently announced. Heather is the daughter of Tom and Cindy Davis, Fort Scott. Grant is the son of Brad and Robin Hartman and grandson of Ron and Karen Billiard, all of Fort Scott. Ron is well known to the people of Arcadia where he grew up.

Charles and Willa Cable enjoyed tea and cookies with Patty Peterson and Cheyenne Melon on Friday evening. This is one of the many visits the Cables have been making since they returned as pastors of Arcadia Christian Church. Invite them, they will come.

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, (known as D-Day) the Mystery Church (official name) on Main Street in Joplin decided to join the parade.

Ashley and Matthew Shead are members and he plays guitar in the church band. The church doors were open during the parade for children to make tree decorations and so folks could go in for warmth and hot cocoa.

Steve and Sandy Hughes, Texas, spent two nights recently with his mother, Portie Hughes in McPherson, Kan. Her son Tim Hughes, Topeka, will take his mother to Olathe for Christmas dinner in the home of her daughter, Kirby and John Gould and daughters, who will be home from college for the holidays.

Christmas greetings to friends were sent from Lucille Elmore now living in Johnson City, Tenn. They have had snow already this winter. She continues to do her paintings. She bought a piano and has started taking piano lessons. She continues her quilting as she did when living near Arcadia a few years ago.
