LOUIS ALBERT "BUD" SCHAFER JR.

Louis Albert "Bud" Schafer Jr., age 86, resident of Fort Scott, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at the Guest Home Estates in Fort Scott, Kan.

He was born March 20, 1924, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Louis Albert Schafer, Sr. and Corinne Maguire Schafer.

He married Theresa Black on Nov. 26, 1947 in Fort Scott. The couple celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Friday.

Bud graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1941. He later attended Fort Scott Junior College and went on to graduate from Columbia University in New York City with a degree in mathematics.

He served with the United States Navy during World War II. Bud was enrolled in a special operations unit, which was the forerunner to the Navy Seals, where he served in the interior of China during the war.

Following his military service, Bud worked in sales and marketing for Coca-Cola. While working for Coca-Cola, Bud and his wife lived in Michigan and later in Ohio.

They returned to Fort Scott in 1971 and Bud worked for Bruce Marble and Granite Works.

He was a member of the Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the St. Vincent DePaul Society of Dayton, Ohio.

He was also an active volunteer for Birthline.

He enjoyed hunting and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Terry, of the home; five sons, John Joseph Schafer, Dallas, Texas; Bruce James Schafer, Lake View, Ohio; Maurice Jerome Schafer, Kirkland, Wash.; William James Schafer, and wife, Francy, Fort Scott, Kan.; and Louis Albert Schafer III, and wife, Joann, Farmington, New York.

Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Rachel B. Schafer, Katie Schafer, Jack Schafer, Gabriel Schafer, Andrew Schafer, Janie Schafer, Patrick Schafer, Serena Zwart-Schafer, Jacob Schafer, Patricia Schafer, Theresa Schafer, Rachel A. Schafer, and Louis Albert Schafer IV; and three great-grandchildren, Linus Schafer, Kennedy Maguire and Griffin Maguire.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John Joseph Schafer and two sisters, Marian Norelius and Gretchen Schafer.

Father Tom Stroot will conduct the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at the Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 V.F.W.

The Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m., Thursday, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel with visitation following from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
