Petroski reinstated at FSCC

Sonya Petroski has been reinstated as Fort Scott Community College's volleyball coach and resumed her coaching duties beginning with Tuesday's non-conference road match at Evangel University in Springfield, where the Greyhounds were scheduled to face the Evangel JV.

Petroski had been stripped of her duties prior to last Wednesday's home match against Labette. Assistant coach Steve Kramer took over as interim coach for that match, which the 'Hounds won in three games as Petroski watched from the stands.

Petroski was named head coach two seasons ago. No reason for the decision to remove her was given at the time she was removed from her duties. According to an e-mail from FSCC Athletic Director J.D. Ettore, nothing more could be said about the situation as it was a personnel matter, although at the time it sounded as though the move was permanent.

Players went to the stands after the Labette match to greet Petroski and were also present at Tuesday night's FSCC Board of Trustees meeting in support of their head coach.

In a story by Tribune Staff Writer Jason E. Silvers that appeared in Tuesday's edition, the players contended that Petroski had been fired and urged the board to keep her on staff. Petroski was present but did not speak to the board.

Kramer was present and did address the board, questioning why Petroski had been apparently let go in the middle of the season.

"It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. ... It confuses me," Kramer said. "She has a great heart. ... I've never seen anyone with a greater desire to win. ... She sacrifices her needs for theirs. I know she loves these girls as her own."

The Greyhounds will face Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division foe Neosho County tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Arnold Arena.
