FSHS volleyball sweeps SEK opener

PARSONS, Kan. -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball team established itself as one of the teams to beat in Southeast Kansas League play by sweeping the league opening triangular here Thursday.

The Tigers (2-0 SEK, 15-5 overall) top the league along with Chanute and Pittsburg, both 2-0 after sweeping their respective league openers. Chanute is 14-5 overall while Pittsburg is 10-12.

Fort Scott defeated Parsons 28-30, 25-22, 25-21 as Mallory Shelton recorded 10 kills and 5 blocks. Jenna Campbell had 6 kills and Kenzie Middleton had 5 blocks. Kenzie Heatherly served 2 aces and handed out 16 assists. Marliss Allen also served 2 aces while picking up 12 digs.

"Parsons was ready to play," Fort Scott head coach Carol Bingesser said. "They were very scrappy and played great defense. We were sluggish to start with and really couldn't get anything going. We would serve one and out and could never get on a roll. Our play improved in the Coffeyville match."

Scores against Coffeyville were 25-15, 25-10. Shelton had 4 kills and 2 blocks. Megan McDermed picked up 3 kills. Campbell served 4 aces while Heatherly served 7 aces and dished 10 assists.

"Kenzie served very well," Bingesser said. "She served 13 straight points in the second game."

Parsons fell to 1-1, 8-12 while Coffeyville is 0-2, 1-12.

The Tigers play in the Louisburg Tournament today.
