Assistants help 'Hounds succeed
Fort Scott Community College third-year head football coach Jeff Sims will be the first to admit that "to make yourself look good, you surround yourself with good people."
It seems that Coach Sims has done that when it comes to the assistant coaches that he has on the Greyhound coaching staff this season.
Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator Curtis Horton is in his third year at FSCC coaching with Coach Sims. Coach Horton takes care of calling the offensive plays and coaches the "Big Dawgs," the offensive linemen.
Under the guidance of Horton, the FSCC offense has put up some impressive numbers so far in 2009. The Greyhounds, so far, have the No. 1 offense in the Jayhawk Conference for the second time in three years.
Before coming to the Fort, Horton coached at Southwestern College, Baker University, Kansas Wesleyan, Scott City High School, and Sublette High School.
Eddie Brown is no stranger to FSCC football fans as he was a standout wide receiver as a 'Hound in 1988. Coach Brown still owns the single-season record for catches and yards in a season as a Greyhound player.
Coach Brown enters his second season as a 'Hound assistant and is in charge of special teams and running backs. Brown also serves as recruiting coordinator for the Greyhounds.
Brown was known as "Touchdown" Eddie Brown during his playing career in the Arena Football League. Brown was voted the greatest player in the league's history in January of 2006.
The Miami, Fla. native is a member of the FSCC Hall of Fame having been inducted in 2008.
Defensive Coordinator James Lott enters his first year at FSCC. Lott's resume includes stints in both the college level and the NFL level.
Lott's has spent time with the New York Jets, Texas A&M, Central Michigan, Midwestern State, Middle Georgia College, Northwest Mississippi College, and trinity Valley Community College. Lott has also served as a member of the NFL's minority coaching program.
Coach Lott is a 1992 graduate of the University of Texas where he lettered in both football and track. Lott won five NCAA high jump titles during his college career and was an alternate on the 1988 Olympic team.
Lott signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bears in 1989 and played with the Green Bay Packers in 1990.
New Defensive Line Coach Sean Cherico is no stranger to the Jayhawk Conference. Cherico comes to Fort Scott after spending the last 13 years at Coffeyville Community College.
Prior to Coffeyville, Cherico coached at North Dakota State, Montana State, and Bethany.
New FSCC Linebackers Coach Garrett Cox comes to Fort Scott after spending most of his coaching career in the Southeastern Conference.
Cox does the defensive work on game days from the press box, sending down calls and working with Coach Lott. His game knowledge has been one of the keys to the Greyhounds' defensive success in 2009.
Coach Cox started his coaching career at the University of Georgia as an undergraduate assistant. He then moved on to Georgia Southern University two years later. Cox also has had coaching stints at Buford High School and Auburn University before coming to Fort Scott.
Aaron Hosack, wide receivers coach, begins his first season with the 'Hounds after an outstanding football-playing career.
Hosack played wide receiver for Coach Sims at Mount San Antonio Junior College (Calif.) before going to the University of Minnesota. In two seasons there, he racked up 80 catches for 1,463 yards and 11 touchdowns.
After his college career was over, Hosack signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings where he spent his rookie season on the Vikings' practice squad. Hosack played in NFL Europe for three seasons and earned All-NFL Europe honors in 2006 while leading the Frankfurt Galaxy to the World Bowl Championship game.
Hosack also spent time on the rosters of the New Orleans Saints of the NFL and the Colorado Crush of the Arena League before starting his coaching career.
Todd Worley enters his first season with the Greyhounds coaching the defensive backfield and helping with the scout teams.
A Columbus, Ohio, native Worley was a three-year starter at defensive end at Division III College of Wooster (Ohio). Worley graduated from Wooster in 2003 and then earned a law degree from Case Western Reserve University in 2006.
Coach Worley played and coached in the German Football League before going into coaching. He was player personnel assistant for the San Jose SaberCats in the Arena League in 2007.
Coach Worley worked with the San Francisco 49ers in player personnel and has worked with Team Arkansas of the short-lived All-American Football League.
The No. 3 nationally-ranked Greyhounds take on the Highland Scotties as their Homecoming opponent in Jayhawk Conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Frary Field.
An autograph session with Greyhound players will be held after the game. This will be a great time to meet the players up close and to thank the coaches for all of their hard work and dedication.
