Visiting Suns win in five
When Fort Scott Community College head volleyball coach Sonya Petroski called time out in the fifth game of a non-conference match with Cedar Valley (Texas) at Arnold Arena Thursday night, the huddle formed with the Greyhounds leading 13-12 on the scoreboard.
When they came out of the huddle, the score was tied.
After she called over the official to go over the scoresheet, the 'Hounds trailed 14-13.
There were not any penalties or funny calls or anything else that caused the score the change. The scorer's table had missed points during the match and Cedar Valley's head coach, Paul Wisden, rightfully asked for a check.
Cedar Valley had the serve but Lindsay Smith tipped the ball down to the floor to tie it for the Greyhounds (4-7) and give them serve. Unfortunately, Fort Scott made an error on the next point, giving the Suns the ball and a 15-14 lead.
The Greyhounds hustled to keep what should have been a kill from hitting the floor. The ball went to one sideline, was kept inbounds, hit again and then ticked off of and over the net only to hit the floor on the other side out of bounds.
The point gave Cedar Valley a 3-2 win in the best-of-5 match, 17-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 16-14.
The 'Hounds jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first game and held on. The second game was tight early on as Cedar Valley clung to a 16-15 lead before finally pulling away.
Game three was tight throughout. Neither side led by more than four points until a 21-21 tie was broken when Cedar Valley was caught out of rotation. Bailey Dodson served aces on two of her last three serves, including the last one, to close out that game.
The Suns scored 12 of 14 points in one run to go up 15-6 in the fourth game. Their lead was as large as 22-12 before the 'Hounds fought back. But even though they scored five of the last fight points, Cedar Valley was able to tie the match.
The Suns held a 6-2 lead early in the final match. The 'Hounds served three in a down including an ace by Tayler Hosey to bring them within 6-5.
Since it's not certain where the Cedar Valley points were missed, what can be said is that Jessica Cook's kill appeared to put the 'Hounds up 12-10 (that might have actually broken an 11-11 tie). Then Hosey's tip fell to the floor, making it, apparently, 13-10.
Cedar Valley broke serve and got within 13-12 on the scoreboard when Petroski called her time out. Cedar Valley's missing 13th point was found during the time out. The 14th point was found during the review with Petroski.
Cedar Valley's victory leaves the Greyhounds winless at home, something they'll try to resolve at noon Saturday when Northeastern Oklahoma A&M pays a visit to Arnold Arena for another non-conference match.
For the 'Hounds, Katie VanLue finished the match with 11 kills while Hosey had 9 and Lindsay Smith picked up 7. Kara Baker dished 21 assists. Jessica Cook had 8 blocks and Hosey and Baker each served 4 aces while Dodson served 3.
