Harold Dean Hewett, of the Presbyterian Village, Fort Scott, died Friday morning, March 13, 2009, at his residence. He was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Farlington, Kan., the son of Ivan E. Hewett and Ethel Williams Hewett. Dean was a 1936 graduate of Girard High School and attended Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg. He married Mary Jean Armstrong on Sept. 16, 1945, at Fort Scott. Dean served from 1942 to 1946 as Lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War II. He was retired as business manager for Shepherd Team Auto. Dean was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as lay member to Conference and Sunday School Teacher. He also was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club, past president of the U-234 Board of Education, served as vice president of the Board of Trustees of Fort Scott Community College, and past president of the Fort Scott Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a board member of Fort Scott Industries, Mercy Hospital Lay Advisory Board and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary board. In his earlier years, Dean excelled playing baseball and sang on many occasions as a quartet member with his father and two brothers.
