HEWETT

Clifford D. Hewett, age 93 former resident of Girard, Kansas, passed away peacefully at the Fort Scott Manor on May 2, 2008. He was born on September 11, 1914, to parents Ivan and Ethel Williams Hewett. Cliff grew up in and around Farlington, Kansas. One of five children, Cliff was preceded in death by his sisters Blanche and Ruth and his brother Don. He married Lucille Peterson on March 21, 1937. She passed away in March, 1966. In June of 1968 he married Frances Marchello Jones. She passed away after 13 years of marriage.

Cliff was a lifelong member of the Farlington Methodist Church. He sang in the choir, served as lay leader, and taught Sunday School for many years. He and his brothers, Don and Dean, sang together at many special occasions in the surrounding area. He was active in several organizations, ranging from local school boards, Girard Lion's Club, and coaching youth basketball, softball and baseball teams. He served as president of the Girard Hospital Board during the construction of the new facility on the west side of Girard.

He was a farmer turned insurance agent, owning and operating the Cliff Hewett Insurance Agency in Girard for many years. He most enjoyed life through working with others. He had a lifelong appreciation for the art of baseball, first avidly playing on local teams, later as coach and mentor, and finally as a devoted follower of major league teams.

He is survived by his children and their families, daughters Barbara Stuart (Fort Scott), Elaine Wallof and husband Bill (Tampa, Florida), and son Dennis Hewett and wife Betty, (Livermore, Calif.). Grandchildren include David Stuart (Fort Scott), Susan Schenk (Tonganoxie), Jennifer Rochez and Kristen Hewett (Livermore, Calif.), and Thomas Wallof (Tampa, Fla). Great grandchildren are Angie Aikin (Fort Scott), Ryan Stuart (Pittsburg), Manda McNutt (Kansas City, Kan.), Christopher Hewett Rochez, Isabella Rochez (Livermore, Calif.), Emily Schenk, Megan Schenk, and Katie Schenk (Tonganoxie). He is also survived by his brother, Dean Hewett (Fort Scott), three great-great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their extended families.

Rev. Steve Cole will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Farlington United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel in Fort Scott on Monday night, May 5th, from 7 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Farlington Cemetery.
