Harold Arthur Lewis, 92, of Fort Scott, died Monday morning, Jan. 28, 2008 at Mercy Health Center.

He was born Oct. 3, 1915 in Soloman, Kansas, the son of Harry Arthur and Lucile Gatchett Lewis. He married Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Shaffer on May 17, 1948 in Fort Scott. She preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 1998.

Mr. Lewis lived most of his life in the Fort Scott area having worked for the Fort Scott Greenhouse for 35 years before retiring in 1980. He was a sergeant in the United States Army during WWII.

He is survived by two children, Linda Sue Cooper of Richards, Mo., and Fallon Lewis of Fort Scott, Kansas, two granddaughters, Betsy Carroll of Arcadia, Kansas, and Rachel Pliler, Payton Wheeler, Cassandra Ward, B.J. Mize and Josh Mize, two sisters, Lilas Fay Kenyon of Branson, Mo., and Leata Lee Montgomery of Florida.

In addition to his wife, Betty, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Elmer and Dick Lewis, and three sisters, Nadine Gordon, Patricia Holingsworth and Elmis Standard.

Rev. Steve MacArthur will conduct graveside services at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at the Fort Scott National Cemetery. Olson-Frary-Burkhart V.F.W. Post 1165 will provide military honors. Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
