Vernon "Tommy" Jenkins Sr., age 96, formerly of 417 South Little, Fort Scott, Kansas died Thursday, October 27, 2006, at the Cornerstone Village in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was born February 13, 1910, in Pittsburg, Kansas, the son of Will Jenkins and Laura Hill Jenkins. He married Dorothy Long.

He worked for the Frisco Railroad for many years in Fort Scott. He then moved to Minnesota, where he was employed by Sears. When he returned to Fort Scott, he worked for Bruce Marble and Granite Works. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

He is survived by a son, Waymon Jenkins, Berkeley, Calif.; three daughters, Rosella Van and husband Lloyd, Fort Scott, Lorene Vick, Perry, Okla. and Joan Webster, Tulsa, Okla.; step-daughter, Frances Clark-Davis and husband Craig, Irving, Texas; 20 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Vernon Jenkins, Jr.; and two sisters, Cleo Cummings and Fern Cowan.

Elder John T. Owens will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the West Plains Cemetery. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family at cheneywittcondolence@cheneywitt.com.
