Remembering the ‘small step, giant leap’

Friday, July 19, 2019

Although it’s been five decades, a landmark event in U.S. history resonates with local citizens.

The Tribune spoke to some Fort Scott residents about their memories of the Apollo 11 moon landing, which subsequently resulted in the first man stepping on the lunar surface, on the 50th anniversary of the historic event.

Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours and 39 minutes later on July 21; Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later.

Two of the residents who spoke with the Tribune were serving in the military at the time, and shared their thoughts on the achievement and what it meant to the U.S.

See the print or online edition of the Tribune for complete story.
