’Hound women demonstrate depth in win over USM

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

Fort Scott Community College’s women have been able to demonstrate the depth of their roster in the past couple of games.

Sophomore starting guard Shalina Harper has missed the Greyhounds’ last two games and starting guard Jada Perry and backup post Ja’Carria Ferrell missed Monday night’s game versus the University of Saint Mary JV at Arnold Arena.

But several other players got their chances to shine in Saturday’s 74-60 win over Central-Columbus, Neb., on the second day of an event at Southeast (Neb.) and Monday night’s 82-48 rout of USM’s JV.

Saturday: Fort Scott 74, Central-Columbus 60.

The teams were fairly even in the first half offensively with the Greyhounds leading 43-39 at the break. When things turned more to the defensive side in the second half, Fort Scott pulled away.

The ’Hounds held the Raiders to 9 third-quarter points in extending the lead to 59-48.

Tajshia Moore led Fort Scott with 18 points followed by JonN’a McDonald off the bench with 13 points and 7 assists. Ally McKenzie had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Fort Scott shot 40 percent for the game, making 29 of 73 field-goal attempts while turning the ball over just 12 times. Central shot 43 percent on 24 of 56 but coughed up the ball 22 times.

Monday: Fort Scott 82, Saint Mary JV 48.

JonN’a McDonald got one of the starting guard slots in Monday night’s game and came through with a 12-point, 3-assist outing.

Though Saint Mary was able to forge a 15-15 tie with four minutes left in the opening quarter, the ’Hounds began to pull away with a 10-1 run to end the period up 25-16.

Another 10-1 run midway through the second made it 37-18 with 4:47 to go. A 3-point basket by D’Andra Credit made it 42-22 with 1:28 on the clock before the Spires scored the last 5 points of the half, all on free throws.

Fort Scott’s defense was so smothering in the second quarter that Saint Mary was only able to take two shots from the floor in the first four minutes and a total of five in the quarter. That continued into the third quarter as the Spires missed their first six shots from the floor.

Fort Scott scored the first 8 of the quarter to make it 50-27 with 6:33 to go. The ’Hounds made 7 of their first 9 shots of the half, extending the lead to 62-32 with 1:17 left following a 11-0 run.

Sydney Dwyer’s stickback with 30 seconds left made it 64-34 going into the final stanza. The Greyhounds scored the first 11 of the fourth quarter with Moore scoring the last four to make it 75-34 with 5:02 to go.

Ally McKenzie scored Fort Scott’s last points on a layup with 2:40 to go which made it 82-39. Saint Mary scored the last 9 against mostly reserves.

Moore made 9 of 13 shots from the field to lead Fort Scott with 18 points while McKenzie followed with 14. Credit finished with 10 off the bench for the ’Hounds.

Jaleia Rice led the Spires with 13 points followed by Geova Alexander with 10.

Fort Scott shot 49 percent from the field, making 33 of 67 attempts. Saint Mary shot 43 percent on 17 of 40. The Spires made only 5 of 19 fielders in the middle two periods.

Fort Scott crashed the boards for a 41-31 advantage. McKinney and Moore had 5 rebounds each.

The Greyhounds forced 30 turnovers while committing only 11. Cameron Wilson had 4 steals. Fort Scott forced 10 turnovers in the second quarter along.

The Greyhounds (13-2) will be idle until January 16 when they travel to Joplin to play the Missouri Southern JV.
