Mercy president gives update on future health care

Friday, November 9, 2018

With the closing of Mercy Hospital Fort Scott due to take place Dec. 31, the Tribune reached out to Reta Baker, Mercy Hospital Fort Scott president, to learn more about the future of health care in Bourbon County and the hospital building.

Baker has provided the following information:

New models of care are becoming a reality for many rural communities. It is not an easy change. At Kansas Hospital Association meeting this week, it was reported that 73 percent of the rural hospitals report having a negative operating margin, and over the upcoming year we will see many more communities faced with this change and we may be in a position to be the cutting edge example of doing this successfully.
