PITTSBURG — Uniontown’s softball team qualified for the program’s second State Tournament appearance by beating Marmaton Valley and Oswego in the Colgan Class 2-1A Regional Tournament here Tuesday.

The second-seeded Eagles (16-6) defeated third-seeded Marmaton Valley, 9-2, in the second semifinal. They then beat top seed Oswego — which had beaten host Colgan, 5-4, in the first semifinal — by an 8-3 score in the championship game.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my girls winning the two most important games of the season,” Uniontown head coach Paula Coyan said. “We’re looking forward to heading to Pratt next week to make a show there.”

Uniontown’s previous State appearance was in 2013. They lost to then-unbeaten Oskaloosa, 2-1, in the first round that year.

Uniontown 9, Marmaton Valley 2.

Marmaton Valley (10-11) scored first when Patricia Outlan hit a solo home run with 2 out in the top of the first inning.

Uniontown went ahead, for good as it turned out, in the second. Mackenzie Woods walked with one out and Makenzee Franklin brought her home with a triple. Franklin later scored on an error.

In the third, Bri Stokes added a run to the board when her double brought in Sivanah McAnulty, who had drawn a leadoff walk.

Franklin doubled with one out in the fourth and went on to score on a sacrifice fly by Karleigh Schoenberger to make it 4-1.

A 2-out triple from Franklin’s bat plated Danielle Young and Woods, extending the lead to 6-1.

Marmaton Valley scored once in the top of the sixth. Uniontown responded with 3 in the bottom half. Schoenberger led off with a double. McAnulty bunted her way on base with the runners at third and second at the end of the play. Schoenberger scored on the front end of a double steal. Madison Wilkinson bunted McAnulty home and ended up at third. She then stole home for the final tally.

Franklin was 3 for 3 with 3 runs batted in for Uniontown while McAnulty was 2 for 3.

Maddie Ard allowed 9 hits but didn’t walk a batter and struck out 7.

Uniontown 8, Oswego 3.

The Indians finished in second place in the Three Rivers League during the regular season with an 18-2 record, their only losses a sweep at the hands of champion Southeast. But through a quirk of league scheduling — in a 12-team league with 10 doubleheaders in a 20-game season, everyone can’t play everyone — Uniontown and Oswego didn’t face each other in the regular season.

Neither side scored until the third inning. Uniontown posted a single tally in the top half as Franklin led off with a single to center, moved to second on a groundout, stole third, and scored on another groundout. Oswego scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

Uniontown scored 4 times in the top of the fourth. Stokes led off with a single to center. Goodridge hit a one-out triple to get her home, then scored on a groundout. Franklin singled to center. Jacy Bowen bunted and Oswego’s third baseman committed an error. After the dust settled, Franklin had scored the third run of the inning and Bowel was on third. She then stole home.

McAnulty led off the fifth, stole second and third and scored on a groundout to make it 6-2. Franklin singled with one out in the fifth and scored on Schoenberger’s single. Wilkinson led off the top of the seventh with a walk, moved up on a pair of groundouts and then stole home to make it 8-2.

Oswego tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Allie Vail hit a one-out single past second base and scored on Lindsy Dinnsen’s 2-out double. But Ard got a groundout to end the game.

Ard (10-2) allowed 14 hits but again didn’t walk anyone and struck out 5.

Franklin was 3 for 4 at the plate for Uniontown.

Uniontown will play defending State champion Chase County at 7 p.m. Thursday in Pratt.
