Beard wins discus at Jayhawk-Linn meet

MOUND CITY — Northeast’s Carlee Beard was the only event winner among area athletes at the Jayhawk-Linn Invitational here Monday.

This meet included Class 4A schools such as Prairie View and Louisburg in the field. With that, Northeast’s girls finished fifth in team standings with 32 points and five medals. Uniontown’s girls were seventh with 22 points and picking up eight medals. Prairie View was the winner with 158 points while Olpe was second with 135.

Northeast was sixth on the boys’ side with 45 points and 10 medals while Uniontown placed ninth with 28 points and eight medals.

Beard’s winning effort in girls’ shot put was 31 feet, 3 inches. Runner-up Cyla Gardner of Richmond-Central Heights was just three inches behind in second place while Karly McDougald of Olpe was third at 31 feet even. Sammie Hampton of Uniontown was fourth at 29’ 3”.

There were no second-place results from area female athletes. Thirds went to Sidney Maslen of Northeast in both hurdles races. She timed in at 19.56 seconds in the 100s and 54.10 in the 300s. Brittney Wyland of Northeast was third in high jump while Paige Mason of Uniontown was fourth after a four-way tie-breaker was needed at 4’ 6”.

On the boys’ side, the best finish for area athletes were both tallied by Northeast. Daniel Balk cleared 9’ 6” in pole vault while Jasper Atchison was second in the 3,200 meters in 10:49.14. Uniontown’s Luke George was third in the 3,200 in 12:10.36

Thirds also went to Atchison in the 1,600 in 4:58.89, Northeast’s Kamryn O’Dell in discus at 110 feet even, and Jared Napier in javelin at 133’ 1”, and to Uniontown’s Ben George in triple jump, clearing 38’ 10”.

Uniontown will compete at Neodesha on Thursday while Northeast will take part in the Girard Optimist Club Invitational Friday.
