’Hounds take second game to salvage split
Fort Scott Community College’s baseball team managed to salvage a split with Johnson County Thursday at Dave Regan Stadium. After losing game one badly, 19-2, the Greyhounds came back to take the second game, 10-9, as they hit four home runs.
The Cavaliers took control of game one with an 8-run second inning that made it 10-0. They also added another 8 in the top of the seventh.
Ben Kiefer was the only ’Hound with more than one hit, going 2 for 3. Andrew Morrow hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.
Game two was tied 1-1 after one and 3-3 after two. Back-to-back-to-back homers leading off the bottom of the third by Morrow, Quinn Waterbury and Sean Moore made it 6-3.
A two-run shot by Morrow, his division-leading 15th of the season, made it 8-5 after four.
A solo homer by Burgess in the top of the ninth brought the Cavaliers within 10-9. But closer Kobi Schmitt got the last two outs for his eighth save of the season.
Kyle Smith (4-0) allowed 5 run son 7 hits and 4 walks while striking out 7 through the first five innings. Collin Fraley struck out 5 batters in 2 1/3 innings of relief. He was also 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 runs batted in.
The Greyhounds remain in second place in the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division following the sweep but fell a game further behind division-leading Cowley, which swept fading Allen on the road. Cowley improved to 23-3 in the division and 31-8 overall while Fort Scot stands at 20-6, 34-9. Johnson County is in third place at 16-10, 29-13, two games up in Kansas City (14-12, 22-17). KCK split with Neosho County Thursday.
With weather concerns today, Fort Scott and Johnson County agreed in advance to postpone the return doubleheader at Overland Park until Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. Cowley is scheduled to host Allen.
The Tigers and Greyhounds will face each other next weekend. They’ll play at Lions Field Thursday and at Arkansas City April 21.
