Men’s win streak broken

OVERLAND PARK — Fort Scott Community College’s men saw their eight-game winning streak broken here Saturday as Johnson County claimed a 79-69 victory in Jayhawk Conference-Division II play, extending its own winning streak to eight games.

Fort Scott (2-1 conference, 3-1 Region VI, 17-7 overall) didn’t lose a game in the month of January and last lost on December 9 against Central-Columbus. Johnson County (4-0, 4-0, 12-12), which started the season 0-6, last lost on January 6 by two points to Division I State Fair.

In a battle of the top two shooting teams in the division, Johnson County played the better defense, holding the Greyhounds to 33 percent on 23 of 69 field-goal attempts. Fort Scott came into the game second in the division at 47.3 percent.

Johnson County, shooting a conference-best 47.4 percent this season, hit on 46 percent in this game, making 24 of 52. More importantly, the Cavaliers were 10 0f 22 from 3-point range, while the Greyhounds were a mere 2 of 21.

Johnson led 42-23 at the half. The Greyhounds fought back in the second half, outscoring the Cavs 44-36 with the aid of 20-for-20 free-throw shooting and a 7-rebound advantage on the boards.

Xavier Womack led Johnson County with 21 points followed by Anthony Lupardus with 20, matching his season average. They combined to make 11 of 20 field-goal attempts and Womack was also 12 of 18 at the free-throw line and brought down 10 rebounds.

Tyler Zinn, who came into the game as the division’s leading scorer at 20.9 points per game (0.9 ahead of Lupardus) led the ’Hounds with 17 despite going just 1 of 7 from 3-point range. Donrtell Sanders aded 15, John Montgomery 12, and Andre Nelson and Jayden Davis 11 each. Nelson and Sanders each finished with double-doubles as they both hauled down 10 rebounds.

The Greyhounds play at Highland tonight.
