Tiger girls survive Comet rally

Fort Scott High’s girls survived a furious comeback by Chanute to take a 55-50 victory in Southeast Kansas League play at the FSHS main gymnasium Friday night.

The win paired with Independence’s inability to survive a furious comeback by Pittsburg puts the Tigers in sole possession of second place in the SEK at 5-2, 8-7 overall. Pittsburg outscored Indy (4-3, 8-6) 22-9 in the fourth quarter to take a 41-36 upset on the road.

Fort Scott lead Chanute (2-5, 3-11) by as many as 18 points and held a 14-point advantage after Madison Cook’s jumper made it 48-34 with 3:13 remaining in the contest.

The Blue Comets then scored the next 10 points with Kori Babcock taking a steal in for a layup with 1:36 remaining cutting the deficit to 48-44.

Kharsyn Dwyer scored a layup for the Tigers with 1:17 to go. Then Skyelar Brown made two free throws with 1:02 to go and Cook did the same with 40 seconds left to put the lead back at 10.

Sabrey Trout made a 3-pointer from the left side with 30 seconds left. Then Tout stole the inbound pass and the ball got into Madisyn Thompson’s hands. She scored and drew a foul, then converted the 3-point play to cut the lead to four again, this time 54-50 with 25 seconds to go.

Jenny Denton made one of two free throws with 15 seconds left and Chanute was unable to get the ball downcourt as time expired.

Cook led the Tigers with 19 points on eight-of-12 field-goal shooting and also had 8 rebounds and 4 steals. She is now sixth all by herself on the school’s all-time girls’ scoring list with 834 points, breaking out out a tie with Kary Stewart (1993-96) that existed prior to tip-off. Next on the list is Krista Goltra, who scored 846 points from 2002-06.

Brown added 17 points as she made 6 of 10 shots from the floor.

Busse led Chanute with 15 points followed by Babcock with 12.

Fort Scott shot 53 percent from the floor, making 19 of 36 attempts. Chanute was 19 of 47 for 40 percent.

Free-throw shooting was a major contributor to the Tigers’ success as they went 14 of 19. Chanute attempted only 9 free throws, making 5.

The Tigers led 10-9 after one then scored the first 14 points of the second quarter. Chanute missed its first 5 shots from the floor before finally scoring with 1:32 to go.

Up 26-16 at the half, the Tigers scored the first 8 of the second half as well to extend the margin to 19. The Comets scored 10 of the last 14 to get within 37-26.

Busse hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the Comets to bring them within 39-32 with 7:01 left before the Tigers went on a 9-2 run.

JUNIOR VARSITY — Kyra Pryor scored 20 points for the Tigers in a 40-35 win over Chanute.

Fort Scott plays at Labette County on Feb. 9.
