Both Northeast teams to play for fifth today in Liberal

LIBERAL, Mo. — Both Northeast High School basketball teams will play for fifth place in the Tony Dubray Classic here this afternoon.

With the first two days of play postponed by the weekend snowstorm, play finally got underway Wednesday with both Viking teams taking losses. The boys fell to second-seeded Colgan, 74-34, while the girls were defeated by fourth-seeded host Liberal, 42-24.

Friday night, both teams won in their consolation semifinal. The girls defeated Three Rivers League rival Crest in overtime, 48-44, while the boys beat Crest, 54-38.

At press time, the only game with details provided was the boys’ contest versus Colgan, summarized below

Wednesday: Colgan boys 74, Northeast 34.

The Vikings saw a four-game winning streak fall by the wayside despite an 11-point effort from Tre McLaughlin that included three 3-point field goals.

Jeremiah Buche led Colgan with 18 points. Bradley Beykirch added 12 and Cal Marquardt finished with 11.

According to statistics provided by Trent Kling of KSHQ Radio, Colgan made 63 percent of hits field-goal attempts while holding Northeast to 44 percent on 12 of 27. The Vikings also made just one of 9 free-throw attempts.

Matt Cashero aided Northeast with 13 rebounds. Corbin Moore handed out 3 assists.

Northeast girls (3-7) will have a rematch with Bronaugh, Mo. (4-11), in today’s fifth-place game, which will tip off at 1 p.m. The Vikings lost a December 13 match-up in Arma, 39-36. Bronaugh lost in Wednesday’s first round to Colgan, 42-25, then beat Golden City, Mo., Friday night by a 47-42 score.

Viking boys (5-5) will face Golden City (6-6) in today’s 2:30 consolation final. Golden City fell to host Liberal in the first round before beating Bronaugh, 67-34, in Friday night’s consolation semifinal.

Tuesday night, both Northeast teams will be at Crest for a Three Rivers League doubleheader.

The third-place and championship games for each gender will be played on Sunday.
