Coffeyville didn’t make it easy for Fort Scott High’s girls in Southeast Kansas League play Tuesday night. But in the end, the Tigers’ greater depth was too much for the Golden Tornado to overcome as Fort Scott took a 48-37 victory.

Fort Scott is now 3-1 in the SEK and 4-4 overall, tied for second place with Independence. Coffeyville (0-3, 0-8), meanwhile, has lost its last 20 league games and its last 16 overall.

But the Nado made an early charge, scoring 9 consecutive points in the first quarter to take a 9-4 lead with 2:54 on the clock. Jordan Rooks scored 7 of those points.

But Fort Scott scored the last 10 points of the first quarter and the first 5 of the second. Jocie Allen scored a pair of transition baskets and Ella Beth took a steal in for a layup in the final minute of the first to make it 10-9. Then Madison Cook scored in the paint to open the second and also converted a 3-point play after following up her own missed 3-pointer and drawing the foul.

Skyelar Brown’s 3-point shot with 2:06 to go was the last score for either team in the first half but provided the Tigers with a 9-point cushion going into the locker room.

Rooks hit a 3-pointer for Coffeyville to open the scoring in the third quarter. But the Tigers scored the next 6 on two Cook baskets and one by Brown in transition. The run made it 28-16 with 6:32 to go.

Beth hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:09 left in the third to make it 33-21, the score going into the final stanza.

Coffeyville scored 10 of the first 15 of the fourth with Rooks bringing her team within 38-31 with 4:02 to go. However, the Nado didn’t score again until just 20 seconds remained in the game.

The Tigers scored 9 straight to make it 44-31 with 1:27 to go.

Cook finished with a double-double for the Tigers, 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 14 rebounds, Brown added 12 points and handed out 5 assists.

Rooks made 8 of 16 shots for the Nado and finished with 21 points, which included 5 3-pointers. But only Chelsea Homan, who had 8 points, added more than 4 to Coffeyville’s total.

The Tigers travel to Independence for an SEK battle Friday night.
