PITTSBURG — Fort Scott High School’s girls outscored Pittsburg 19-8 in the third quarter here Friday night as the Tigers pulled away for a 54-44 Southeast Kansas League victory over the Purple Dragons.

Pittsburg’s Marque English dominated the first half of the boys’ contest, scoring 20 of his game-high 26 points as the Purple Dragons went on to roll by the Tigers, 79-40.

Tiger girls (2-1 SEK, 3-4 overall) held a 6-2 lead early in the first quarter. Pittsburg’s Rylee Johnson hit a 3-pointer with just under three minutes remaining to close the deficit to one point.

Madison Cook’s basket with 5 seconds left extended the Tigers’ lead to 8-5 and her pair of free throws were the first points of the second stanza.

Ciara Stumfoll’s putback of a teammate’s miss pushed Fort Scott’s lead to 13-9 but the Purple Dragons (1-3, 2-5) scored 4 straight to tie it.

Cook was fouled putting back a rebound late in the period and converted the 3-point play, then put back another miss to make it 21-15. A pair of free throws by Kaitlyn Kidd allowed Pittsburg to remain within 4 at the half.

Fort Scott scored the first 6 points of the second half but Pittsburg answered with 7 in a row to get within 27-24.

The Tigers scored 12 of the final 13 of the period. Cook scored the first 5 in the run and Ella Beth hit a 3-pointer. A free throw by Stumfoll, two by Cook and Brooklyn Sheehy’s first varsity basket of the season made it 40-25 after three.

The closest Pittsburg got after that was the final margin as the Dragons scored 7 of 8 after Fort Scott had pulled its starters.

Cook led the Tigers with 24 points, her third 20-point game of the season and seventh as a high-school varsity player. She has scored in double figures in every game this season and 20 of her last 21.

Eight other Tigers scored, including Skyelar Brown with 7 and Ella Beth and Jenny Denton with 6 each. Kidd led Pittsburg with 11 points.

The Tigers (1-2, 2-5) looked to keep the Dragons within shouting distance and were still within 12 points, 34-22, with around three minutes to go in the first half. Pittsburg, however, scored 18 of the final 23 points of the half, including 4 in a row by Gavyn El-Kamil to end the half with the Dragons up 52-27.
