MORAN — Northeast’s girls took a first-round match-up in the Marmaton Valley pre-season round-robin tournament here Friday night by a 58-18 score. In the boys’ contest, the Wildcats held off the Vikings for a 52-40 win.

Northeast’s girls (1-0) held Marmaton Valley (1-1) to three second-half points while scoring 33 of their own.

Sophomore Haley Claffey led the Vikings with 16 points followed by senior Emily Watson with 11. Madison Walker and Rachel Fox each added 9 points.

"Very proud of our effort and attitude," Northeast head coach Scott Post said. "We have made a strong commitment to defense this year and I really liked what I saw other than the foul situation in the first half. We got into foul trouble early and they made 9 free throws in the second quarter. We were leading 25-15 at half and we talked about the issue. I appreciate the fact our girls were very open to the main issue and we made a commitment to up our defensive effort by moving our feet and keeping our hands off. It worked great and we created a bunch of turnovers in the second half."

Northeast led 9-4 after one period. They allowed only 2 points in the third and one in the fourth.

"Not perfect, by any means, but for a first game I was pleased overall," Post said. "We will work on some adjustments to our defenses in practice. We have a tough opponent on Thursday in West Elk. We went to overtime last year and won. They are improved and we are inexperienced. I hope to compete and be in the game at the end."

Walker was credited with 6 rebounds while Elizabeth Toms handed out 5 assists and Fox, Walker and Claffey each came up with 5 steals.

Northeast boys (0-1) trailed 26-12 at the half but outscored the Wildcats (1-1) in the second half by 2 points. As with the girls’ result, any further information will be posted on the Tribune’s web site.

Howard-West Elk and Madison were the opponents in the other pair of games Tuesday night. According to its Twitter account, West Elk prevailed in both games although no scores were available.

Thursday’s match-ups will have Northeast taking on West Elk and Madison facing Marmaton Valley. Friday, Northeast will play Madison while West Elk will take on the host school.

There is also a junior varsity division, but the results of those games were not known at press time.
