It was Dig Pink Night. It was Senior Night. But it wasn’t Uniontown’s night Tuesday as visitors Pleasanton and Marmaton Valley took wins from the Eagles in non-league matches at the West Bourbon Elementary gymnasium.

The Eagles (12-23) lost to Pleasanton in two sets, 25-20, 25-18, and Marmaton Valley in three, 18-25, 25-17, 25-21. The Wildcats also won the middle match, 25-17 (after going out to a 16-1 lead), 25-19 over Pleasanton.

It wasn’t as though the Eagles were dominated throughout the night. They had stretches of good play and held leads several times. But they didn’t have enough of those good, long runs that help teams win matches.

The Blu-Jays defeated Uniontown for the fourth time in as many meetings this season and the second time in four days as they also won over the Eagles in the Osawatomie Tournament on Saturday (for details about Uniontown’s matches in that tournament, scroll down).

Uniontown scored 7 consecutive points in the first set to take a 16-14 lead. They were within 22-20 but Pleasanton’s Zoe Marshall scored back-to-back points on a kill and a block to help the Blu-Jays close out the set.

The Eagles were within 15-13 in the second set but the Jays went on a 8-2 run to take control.

Lauren Shinn had 8 kills for the Eagles in that match. Maddie Ard handed out 8 assists while Bri Stokes dealt 6. Joy Page came up with 6 digs while Keeley Goodridge had 5.

Uniontown had a 14-8 lead in the first set of its match with Marmaton Valley. The Wildcats rallied and got within 15-13 but the Eagles got on track late, scoring 7 of the last 9 points of the set, putting it away on a Goodridge kill.

Marmaton Valley scored 6 in a row in the second set to go up 9-4. Uniontown fought back and got within 13-12 before the Wildcats scored 10 of the next 11.

Marmaton Valley jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set. But Uniontown took a 20-17 lead Shinn served three consecutive aces.

The Wildcats trailed 21-18 but scored the last 7 points of the match. Three kills by Patricia Outlan helped and an ace on a knuckleball serve by Paige Becker closed out the match.

Goodridge had 7 kills for the Eagles. Ard dished 9 assists. Shinn served 5 aces. Page led with 8 digs and Danielle Nading had 7.

Saturday, the Eagles will play in a Class 2A Sub-State Tournament at Yates Center, which will be seeded on Wednesday. The bracket will be posted on www.kshsaa.org and at www.fstribune.com.

Eagles 1-3 at Osawatomie

OSAWATOMIE — Uniontown’s volleyball team won just one of four matches here Saturday against mostly larger schools in the Osawatomie Tournament.

Uniontown won its first match, beating the tournament hosts, 25-18, 25-20. Lauren Shinn registered 7 kills while Keeley Goodridge had 6.

The Eagles lost to Jefferson County North, 25-17, 25-20. Maddie Ard had 3 kills for Uniontown.

Next, the Eagles were swept by Erie, 25-22, 25-10. Finally, Pleasanton took a 25-21, 25-16 sweep as Danielle Nading had 5 kills.

“We always know when we go to this tournament, we will be seeing some good teams,” Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. “We played an outstanding match against Osawatomie — passed well, attacked well, overall played very smart. Then we ran into a very good Jeff North team. We couldn’t shut down their hitters with our block or defense.

“Going into the next round of play, we faced Erie and Pleasanton and really struggled with our passing, setting and hitting.”
