Paola rallies to oust Tiger baseball, 3-2

PAOLA — Luke Angermeyer’s 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted second-seeded Paola to a 3-2 win over third-seeded Fort Scott High in the Ottawa Class 4A-Division I Baseball Tournament here Tuesday.

Fort Scott (10-9) scored both its runs in the top of the first inning when Grant Goldston hit the Tigers’ first homer of the season over the left-field fence. Kieran Houlihan was on base after hitting a single in front of the homer.

Paola got a run in the bottom of the inning when Kurt Golubski singled in Trevor Boehm with one out. The bases were still loaded after that hit but Tiger pitcher Jarret Lyon struck out the next two batters.

The game turned into a pitching duel between Lyon and Paola’s Blaine Hanf. Nick Modes walked leading off the sixth for Paola and Lyon came out of the game after 94 pitches. Angermeyer was the next batter and he went over the center-field fence.

Hanf went the distance for Paola, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. Goldston and Houlihan each had 2 hits.

Paola (15-7) had 6 hits. Angermeyer was the only Panther who had 2.

Top-seeded Ottawa (16-5) won the later semifinal, 11-0, over Louisburg then went on to beat Paola, 6-5, in 9 innings in the championship game. The Cyclones will play in the State Tournament May 25-26.
