'Hounds salvage Tuesday split, break losing streak
Fort Scott Community College's softball team broke a seven-game losing streak Tuesday when the Greyhounds won the second game of a home conference doubleheader at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex.
Friday, Fort Scott traveled to Independence, where the Greyhounds lost in the bottom of the seventh inning in both games, 5-4 and 12-11. Saturday, they went to Arkansas City to face then-No. 16-ranked Cowley, losing 8-0 and 14-4. Tuesday, they hosted Kansas City Kansas at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex, losing game one 7-5 but breaking their losing streak with an 11-10 win in game two. All three doubleheaders were Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division twinbills.
Friday at Independence.
Fort Scott led game one 4-1 after three innings. But Independence scored one in the bottom of the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh to get its first conference win.
Kaylan Morgan led Fort Scott with 3 hits in 4 at-bats and 2 runs batted in on a second-inning single. Aubrey Smith drove in the other 2 runs on a third-inning double. Kylie Pfieffer was 3 for 3.
The Greyhounds tied game two 11-11 in the top of the seventh. Morgan reached base safely on a 1-out error. Aimee Wimp followed with a single and Pfeiffer brought Morgan home on a hit. Wimp tied the score when she came home on a passed ball.
Morgan Curtis led off the bottom of the seventh for Indy and doubles. Pinch-runner Felicia Ruaro moved to third on a bunt and scored when she beat the throw home on a fielder's choice.
Morgan, Wimp, Pfieffer and Smith each has 2 hits for Fort Scott. Morgan drove in 2 runs.
Saturday at Cowley.
The Tigers scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Cowley pitcher Logan Wenzel (9-3) held Fort Scott to 3 hits, one each by Pfieffer, Lauren Scott and Taylor Remington. She didn't walk anyone and struck out 5.
Although Fort Scott managed to get on the board in game two, none of the runs were earned as 4 Cowley errors played a part. The Tigers led 6-0 after two innings and 14-3 after three.
Pfieffer had 2 more hits for the Greyhounds.
Tuesday vs. Kansas City.
Fort Scott's rally came up short in the bottom of the seventh of game one. Kansas City went into the inning with a 7-2 lead. Wimp and Pfieffer both walked with one out and Smith followed with an RBI single to score Wimp. Scott followed with a line-drive single to center to score Pfieffer and Jenna Nevius, who was pinch running for Wimp, to make it 7-5.
After a strikeout, Taylor Brecheisen walked to put two on base with two out. But Kansas City pitcher Megan Sumonja (3-2) got Remington to ground out to end the game.
Sumonja held Fort Scott to 4 hits and struck out 8 batters but she did issue 7 walks. Smith was 2 for 3 for the Greyhounds.
Kansas City scored first in the second game with a Allison Kasick grand slam to make it 4-0. Fort Scott got 3 of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Kia Boyd led off with a single and Pfeiffer followed with a one-out single in front of Bledsoe's second home run of the season.
KCK added another run in the top of the fourth to make it 5-3. Fort Scott took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Michaela Brewer led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Cheyenne Brewer's single plated M.Brewer. Boyd followed up with a game-tying double. Boyd went to third on a fly-ball out and scored on Pfeiffer's single. Blesdoe walked, then Smith hit a single that scored Pfeiffer to make it 7-5.
The Blue Devils went back in front in the top of the fifth with 3 runs. The Greyhounds tied the score at 8-8 in the bottom half when Pfeiffer walked with the bases loaded and two out, forcing in M.Brewer, who had led off with a single.
Kansas City went back in front again, 10-8, with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Smith (4-8), who was the losing pitcher in the opener, came on during the inning and was able to finally shut down the Blue Devil offense. She also pitched a scoreless top of the seventh to finish with 1 2/3 innings of no-hit, no-walk pitching. Smith only threw 11 pitches but 9 of them were strikes.
Rooks led off the bottom of the seventh by drawing a walk. Boyd singled and Morgan walked to load the bases for Pfeiffer, who doubled in Rooks and Boyd to tie the score. Bledsoe followed with a single to bring Morgan in with the game-winning, streak-busting run.
Pfeiffer, Scott and C.Brewer each had 2 hits for the Greyhounds, who now stand at 2-8 in conference play and 12-19 overall. Kansas City is 1-3, 9-7.
Cowley, which moved up to No. 9 in this week's NJCAA poll, swept Johnson County on Friday and leads the division at 6-0 and is 18-11 overall. No. 15 Hutchinson, which split a non-conference twinbill at Hesston Tuesday, is in second place at 4-0, 15-6. Independence is 3-5, 6-16. The Pirates were swept by third-place Johnson County on Saturday and split with Cloud County Tuesday.
The Greyhounds will host Cloud County (5-3, 12-10) Saturday at noon in a conference doubleheader.
