Greyhounds sweep at Hesston

HESSTON -- Fort Scott Community College's basketball teams swept Hesston College here Wednesday night in non-conference, Region VI seeding games.

Fort Scott's women completed a season sweep of the Larks with a 79-60 win in the opener. They improved to 3-6 in the region and 15-7 overall. That places them fifth on the table in seeding, a position in which they would qualify for the post-season but play a first-round game on the road.

Fort Scott's men salvaged a season split with a 63-50 win, evening the season series after losing to Hesston at Arnold Arena on Jan. 21. The Larks have not won since then, going 0-6.

Greyhound men (5-4, 13-14) are tied for the No. 3 seed with Johnson County, which which they split the season series. Both the 'Hounds and Cavaliers are a half-game behind No. 2 Highland (5-3, 18-7), which was idle Wednesday night. The top two seeds receive first-round byes and host a second-round game. The third and fourth seeds host a first-round game.

Women: Fort Scott 79, Hesston 60.

The Greyhounds scored 22 points off 29 Hesston turnovers in their win. The teams were nearly statistically even otherwise.

Shenessia Walters led the Greyhounds with 17 points followed by Sarah Kelley with 16 and Natalia Ready with 15. Yazmin Batch scored 10 off the bench.

Whitney Green was the only Lark to reach double figures with 14 points.

Tabor Spurling had 9 rebounds for the 'Hounds, who outrebounded Hesston (18, 8-16) 47-42.

Men: Fort Scott 63, Hesston 50.

Tyler Zinn led Fort Scott with 20 points in the win, going 11 for 11 at the free-throw line. Brolon Morton had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Logan Miller added 11 points.

Heath Agnew led Hesston (1-8, 10-15) with 12 points.

Fort Scott outrebounded the Larks 35-23 and held Hesston to 28-percent field-goal shooting.

Both Fort Scott teams are idle until Wednesday when they host Kansas City Kansas in Jayhawk Conference-Division II games at Arnold Arena. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m. The men will follow at 7:30. Kansas City swept the 'Hounds in late January.
