Rose Shular Campbell

Rose Shular Campbell, 96, of Pittsburg, passed away Jan. 1, 2017, at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg. She was born on Feb. 24, 1920, in Gross, Kan., and was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her parents, John and Mary Shular, distinguished immigrants from Slovenia, two brothers, John and Felix, a sister, Mary Shular Logan and her uncle Tony Shular. She is survived by two nephews, Alan Shular of Las Vegas, Nev., and Nelson Logan of Gainesville, Fla., and a grand niece, Jessica Shular Dunlop of Westfield, Mass., and several relatives in Slovenia.

Rose taught home economics one year in Thayer, six years in Arcadia, where she was a graduate in the class of 1938, and 33 years in Ottawa, retiring in 1982. She received her first degree from Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University, and her master's degree from Northern Colorado University in Greeley. She and her siblings were teachers in the public schools of Kansas for a cumulative total of 137 years.

In high school, she was a class officer for three years, valedictorian of her class and, as a senior, was voted the most popular girl. While in college, she was a member of honorary fraternities, Phi Upsilon Omicron, Home Economics, and Pi Omega Pi, Business.

She was an outstanding athlete in high school, captain of the volleyball team her senior year and she won a league tennis tournament as a senior after only two years of coaching. In her younger days, she was the only girl on a men's baseball team. She continued playing golf into her 80s and bowling into her 90s. She was an avid fan of University of Kansas basketball, the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs.

She was a member of SNPJ Lodge 225 and performed many concerts as a member of the Zivio Slovenci choir. She was the third member of her family to receive a service award for 80 years of membership and remained active into her 90s. She was also a past member of the Countryside Golf Association and the American Bowling Association. Following her father's example, she was active in civic affairs, serving on the election board for many years and as a volunteer with the Mobile Blood Center.

Mrs. Campbell has been cremated according to her wishes. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma, Kan.

Her cremains will be interred with her husband's at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to her memory may be given to the Shular-Logan Scholarship Fund at Pittsburg State University or through the funeral home.
